This thread has been really fun to read! Sadly, I’ve never written a proposal scene before and I am not likely to write one any time soon 🙁 Only one pair of my characters canonically get married and its technically after the story ends. Maybe I could add in a…[Read more]

@gracie-j Thanks for starting this thread! It’s been super helpful for me as well to read through the comments :))
I’m echoing @devastate-lasting that handwriting, although time-consuming when you have to type it all out, is distraction free + portable + forces you to keep going and produce something. It’s also much more enjoyable than staring at…[Read more]

Word sprints might help. Just set a timer and go without stopping. I don’t know if you use Scrivener, but it has this really cool feature where when you go to full screen typing mode, it has a setting that will only let you see the line that you’re typing (or a couple behind) to stay focused. My drafts are messy, but I just tell myself…[Read more]

Jenna Terese replied to the topic Writing for a Career? in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 6 months ago
@lydia-s That’s so awesome that you want to make writing a career! 😀 That’s so awesome! That’s also what I pursued after high school. I didn’t go to college for it, because I didn’t think that was necessary. I think there are plenty of other resources (books, courses, websites, videos, etc.) that you can learn adequately from without paying as…[Read more]

SeekJustice replied to the topic An amazing story idea pops into your head: What do you do? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 6 months ago
I don’t usually write it down right away. I usually just let it percolate (my favourite word, mainly because its so bizarre) in my head for a while. And if I remember it, that means I’m obsessed with it and that’s when I get a physical notebook and start making notes and outlines for it! Mostly I just forget my ideas, which is fine…[Read more]

Hello Future Me is my favourite writing YouTuber and his videos tend to be pretty ok/don’t need much censoring for language or anything like that. They’re very helpful and insightful!

Hello! You sound like a fantastic and fascinating addition to the kingdom of pen! I’m Chelsea, one of the interns, but I tend to go by SeekJustice on the forums. I’m a weird Australian, but other than that it sounds like we share a lot of interests!

Ok, so I had a go at rewriting the scene and it was actually quite fun! I felt like I saw a side of the two characters that I didn’t see when I was originally writing the first draft. (by the way, this is an enemies to lovers relationship, which I know you love!)
And then they weren’t dancing anymore. They were standing in the…[Read more]

Well, I’m a little late to the conversation but I’m keen to get on board! I’m not much of a romance writer (or reader) and my kiss scenes are so awkward and stilted, lol. Any tips for the twenty-year-old who hasn’t got past the “ew, boys are gross” stage of life?

I hear ya! When I feel like that I usually try to remember my WHY. My big goal. WHY am I working on this project? Does it have a message I want people to see? Do I want to prove to myself that I can finish a hard project? Always figure out why you write every story and sometimes remembering that is enough to keep you going.
I’ve…[Read more]

Well, maybe somehow your fictional world is connected to other worlds, including our reality, so that it sometimes is exposed to the cultures of other worlds? Then that would explain being able to have the Bible with real people and events in your fictional world. Or maybe you make it more of an allegory with characters that…[Read more]

@nova21 First, OH MY GOODNESS your story sounds so interesting! Definitely something I would read! 😀
I really like @gracie-j‘s suggestions… Maybe the dream cut off at an important part and she misses some key information; then in her reality where the vision is repeating itself she won’t have this bit of information the vision cut off. There…[Read more]

Jenna Terese replied to the topic How do you develop your story ideas? in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 8 months ago
I always do a lot of brainstorming with a new idea (a.k.a. brain dumping into a journal). I basically just kinda write down whatever little ideas come to mind for the book idea, and when I feel like I have a good amount, I might try to arrange the ideas into plot points. At the same time I work on the characters too, figuring out…[Read more]

I agree, Kipling’s poems are very good. Now I should go back and read some, since I haven’t read any of his works in a while. 😉 My favorite poet of the droll variety is probably A.A. Milne, though. What do you think of his stuff?
