Dante looked at Rory. Despite how clueless he was, he didn’t doubt that he would have been able to handle growing up like Dante did. He hesitated, then asked, “Do you want to run away? Your home sounds like it sucks, and it doesn’t seem like you’re fully away from it yet. I could help.”

“Where I’m from, education is just for the rich who can afford it. We had to spend out time working or finding other ways to get money and survive. No time for books.”

He stared at him with wide eyes. “But I thought everyone had to go to some sort of school. There was Academy for us, but even the inferiors––” he cleared his throat. “younger siblings–– went to school.”

“Great! Good for them, then,” Dante grumbled. There was a moment of silence as he glared at the ceiling. When he looked over and saw Rory’s melancholy face, he sighed.
“I… never really met my parents either,” he said quietly.

“No, she never got… You know what? Why don’t we talk about your family instead? Are your parents married?” Dante sounded suddenly annoyed, despite Rory doing nothing wrong.

He furrowed his brow. “Wait… so she married two husbands?”

Dante covered his face with his hands. How clueless could this guy be? He tried to not sound condescending.
