When did Marie Curie live? I can’t remember exactly how much formal education she had, but she was an extremely clever woman who definitely had a lot of knowledge (and would have made a good forensic scientist :P, which I’m sure would be helpful for your character).
When I create fictional countries/cultures I tend to make them a mash up…[Read more]

I don’t know. They’re new(ish) books, so they wouldn’t be in the public domain yet. Are you part of an online library like BorrowBox or Overdrive? They’d probably have some.
The thing I’ve noticed, in Western societies at least, which is what I know the most about, is the whole “you can’t do this because you’re a woman” is much more of a…[Read more]

I like the sound of that idea! Have you ever read the Brother Cadfael mysteries? They’re quite fun and they’re about a medieval monk during the first English civil war solving murders. I quite enjoy reading those, especially since it’s very obvious the author did her research.

Well, you’re my friend, so I would feel bad if I couldn’t overlook your annoying MC (and yes, she is annoying. I hope she gets better before the end). 😀 But when its just a book written by someone I don’t know, I have no patience.

That’s the problem. I absolutely adore historical fiction but can’t stand half of it. Or more than half of it. But yes, I have an extreme affinity to the “Common man”, which leads me to reading a lot of war historical fiction, because the war (both first and second world wars) were really won by the courage of the average Joe Bloggs. I…[Read more]

Yeah, true. I tend to dislike high born lady types (it’s the Australian in me), so that’s probably why I don’t like them. I also dislike the Regency era ladies in Jane Austen 😛
And yeah, you would think so. But in my experience, people will write anything in their diaries and that usually shows you their more flawed side, which you tend…[Read more]

I don’t really read historical diaries for anything other than research. I tend to find I dislike the person after reading them, I don’t know why. I read Anne Frank’s diary and found it really hard to feel sympathy for her afterwards. I tend to prefer biographies or autobiographies, rather than actual diaries.
I think the thing I’ve…[Read more]

Yeah, the stereotype really annoys me, though I don’t really have any idea how much truth is in the stereotype.

Elsie Dinsmore and I’ve read about other books, such as Gone with the wind and I also have read things like Lottie Moon. I found her annoying until she went to China.

Hello! Are you still around? I’m not working on anything but I’m happy for a chat.
Gone with the Wind is one of the classics I haven’t read. But I’ve never really wanted to, especially as Southern belle type characters tend to put me off. I think its set in the South?

Oh and yep. There’s a lot of outlining methods. I use my own method which seems to work for me and is fairly simple.

Strange and confused can be fun, definitely, but I prefer more realistic scenarios.
I don’t think I’ve ever written anything purely comedic, but I don’t mind watching or reading something purely for fun every now and then. The thing is, my life and family is fairly comedic so I prefer to look for more serious things in fiction 😛

Not scared me in a bad way, but thrilled and creeped me out and fascinated me. Haggard just scares me 😛
I only wrote 1k but it was terribly confused and strange. So I went back to my outline. Have you tried the Snowflake method? You might prefer that way of outlining.

Ah, I see (and The Magician’s Nephew scared me too).
I don’t even remember much about it, just that it terrified me when I read it years ago 🙂

Just curious, why did you suggest it to Kaya if it was too horrifying for you?? I’ve only read King Solomon’s Mines and it terrified me, and I’ve never been able to look at Haggard again.
Hey. Its going pretty well. Yesterday I had an idea to start writing the third book of my trilogy without an outline, but I got 1,000 words in,…[Read more]

Well, I’ve just been reading several histories of British kings and some of my favourite names are the Anglo-Saxon kings…Aethulbert, Aethulwulf, Aethalstan, Aelfred. Great names 😛
Yeah, it has a really nice meaning!
Yes, that’s the one I meant. So far, I’m sure it makes zero sense, but at least I’ve started (though I am working…[Read more]
