@gretald I know, right? We know all these awesome techniques, and some of us *gulp* sound so wise and learned, but there’s such a difference between knowing/talking about something and actually implementing it! 😛

@Daeus wow, okay, yeah, I was thinking more like plot-changing reactions. I totally agree about character minor reactions being important too, but I don’t know if you and I are thinking of the same thing when we say that… would you mind elaborating?

@kate-flournoy Thank you so much for the feedback!!! 🙂 I really appreciate it! Ah, I see what you’re saying about telling vs. showing. I know the difference in my mind, but it’s hard to actually write showing-ly. 😉 I’ll have to go back and edit like crazy. 🙂

Ooh… nice emotional punch in the gut! 😛 The strongest thing, I’m gonna say, is the emotional impact of everything that happened in the story. The story is adorable— very sweet.
I think your prose needs a little work, though. Not the structure of it— but using it to capture all the untapped drama of a character’s inner world.
For instance,…[Read more] -

Hello, fellow KeePers!
I have a short story that I wrote, and I would love, love, LOVE feedback on it! Seriously, I love feedback. Please critique! Tear the scene apart if you have to. 😛 Here’s the short story:The day of my thirteenth birthday I realized why I was different. I guess I’d always known that I was different, but I’d never qui…

You want it to be timeless? 🙂 That’s a good thing. I do think that’s something very worthwhile to strive for.
But I also think it would help if you included the best of both worlds. That said, you still did a lovely job. Keep it up! 😀

@rolena-hatfield Ooo, I really like Ruth Sanderson’s paintings…I wonder if our library has her retelling of the story?
And a secret castle or hideout; that’s a good idea. 😉
Hmm *slips into rambling mode to think better…no one need take notice*
Why are the princesses dancing? What are they really doing and what are they trying to hide in t…[Read more]

You know what, I don’t even know this story… can it be briefly sketched? Or do you know where I could read it?

I’d say so. I mean, almost everything is a reaction to something earlier when you think about it. Something bad happens and the character reacts, either by taking charge and moving on, or by failing, and the results his his actions are then reacted on by others and the circle goes round and round and round and round…People rarely do something…[Read more]

I think romance can work as a subplot, to help with character development or add depth. I never intended to write romance, but it slipped into some of my stories. It’s subtle, part of the background really. In another WIP it helps soften a character and give him depth as well as something to fight for. It’s natural. But I’d not add romance simply…[Read more]

As some of you might know, I’m writing a novella series retelling fairy tales while weaving in the fruit of the Spirit. Anyhow, my first one was a retelling Beauty and the Beast and was about love. The second one is focusing on joy and is a retelling of Rapunzel. Right now I’m trying to plan the third story which will focus on peace.
I want to…[Read more]

That is very interesting, @kate-flournoy , and a good point as well. Romance should actually advance the plot and add to the story but it needn’t do so in a way that is over obvious.
There was a romance in a movie I saw once that failed to really advance the plot or add to the story. The movie needed to have either more romance or have none in…[Read more]
