@aratrea Thank you! I’m sorry; I was in the States over the summer with an unexpected cutoff from the internet so I missed a lot. But now I’m back and continuing on 🙂

@aratrea
Beginning: Protagonist lives for herself. She thinks her way is the best way for her, and anyone who gets in the way or hinders her doesn’t deserve her love or loyalty.
Middle: Protagonist realizes she was wrong and selfish, and tries to make it up to her parents and siblings by dedicating her loyalty to them. She lives to help them and b…[Read more] -

Wow! This lesson was amazing. I’m noticing that, from what I’ve come up with and from what others have said, most of the things that make people change inside are outside circumstances, like losing someone you love, losing a job, getting a new job, etc.
For me, I changed for the worse first and then for the better when my family moved overseas.…[Read more]

@aratrea Okay, thanks!
He changes to #3 and #1. He is now motivated by seeking revenge and protecting those he cares about. Revenge (#3): He feels he will only be truly satisfied if he cleanses the land of the peasants. Protection (#1): He is afraid of the peasants, and believes they will hurt other people he loves if he doesn’t wipe them out.…[Read more]

Theme: Purpose in Life
What do you live for [and why]?1. Family/parents. Loyalty to family defines my worth, even if it means rejecting my conscience or what others say.
2. Principles. It would be a perfect world if everyone lived by good principles like love, courage, honesty, and honor.
3. Myself. My way is the best way for me–I know myself…[Read more] -

@aratrea Thanks!
One of my characters lives out #1. Her parents are the most important thing to her, so she shows them this in complete and utter obedience of them, basically becoming a slave to them. How would I phrase this in the answer?
I’ve realized that #3 is a quite wide answer. The person for adventure (previous #2) would be living for…[Read more]

@aratrea This lesson taught me so much! I have one question before the homework: In my fantasy book (still in the outlining process), I’m drawing the theme and message from my own experiences, and I have one major event in the story based on my own life. I’m a missionary kid, and my main character also moves to a foreign land. From there, not much…[Read more]

It looks to me as if the Catholic side was still taking part in the war even when they pretended peace. So technically they weren’t fulfilling any of the two right answers. They were the ones who attacked, so they continued to take part in the war. You can write it in such a way that the massacre is the consequence of the Catholics refusing to…[Read more]

@aratrea I love theme because it has the power to change how the reader views a certain thing or idea. It excites me because I’ve felt it before and I’m getting to learn how to use it 🙂

“Science fiction is a discussion about what it means to be human in a changing world…” –Christopher McKitterick
@Mark-Kamibaya Thanks so much for this definition! I’ve been struggling with what science fiction actually is as I wrote a sci-fi short story, but this is exactly what my story deals with–and I didn’t even realize it until now. -

@aratrea I’m looking to understand theme better and how to apply it well to my story. This has been my biggest problem in writing, and I could never understand how to do it well even after reading post after post on it, although I could usually spot it easily in books I read. So I’m very excited about getting started!
