Sam Kowal replied to the topic Does This Style Make Any Sense? in the forum Short Story Critiques 6 years, 10 months ago
@rochellaine I didn’t notice the change in style, actually. Except for the fact that there was more going on and less internal monologue. There are still pieces of narration that seem to go on for too long, mostly in the first half. To streamline things more, you could have the narrator only talk about things that directly pertain to what’s…[Read more]

@dekreel This could be a good place to talk about great books and book recommendations, too.
Recently, I’ve read A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

@dekreel 😀 This is a great idea. The problem with me is that I get sort of immersed in the things I’m reading and don’t pay attention to anything else.

@dragon-snapper Yeah, I opened it in Google Docs, and that let me edit it. I haven’t had a ton of time to make comments on it, though. It’s fun to do, though. Shredding, picking apart, and being impressed with another writer’s work is strangely therapeutic 😀 😀 *evil laugh*
When are you looking to have comments in on it? -
Sam Kowal replied to the topic Does This Style Make Any Sense? in the forum Short Story Critiques 6 years, 10 months ago
@rochellaine I think mainly, it would feel less rambling if you locked into a clearly defined scene. That’s unless you really want to keep the fast-paced, skipping over the details kind of narration, which is quite useful, but I think weakens after you use it for too long.

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Cliches of Dystopian Novels in the forum Sci-Fi 6 years, 10 months ago
@jenwriter17 Dystopian! was actually, if I remember correctly, more like ‘utopian’ and it was all about predicting what was going to happen in the future. Prophecy, like @daeus said. And then some authors decided… what the if future isn’t going to be perfect like we think? And then there was dystopian. Modern, more YA focused dystopian sort of…[Read more]

@rochellaine It’s interesting to read, and feels nicely connected to the narrator. It’s a little bit too rambling for me, though. I would like it more if it had more focus and streamline. Also, Joshua is a really funny character XD 😀

@daughteroftheking @jane-maree I can’t figure that out *joins in on head-scratching*
XD Cody was awesome. The secret is, all the Epics were actually wee fairies. Something just went wrong with them and they became humanlike superheroes.
Hmm
I liked Prof a lot. A few of the scenes with Megan felt slightly wrong to me, but overall, I liked her…[Read more]

🙁 We’ll miss you, too. Have a good hiatus, though. And we’ll be waiting for you to come back.

@daughteroftheking 😀 😀 XD I know that phase. Where you’re half still there, in the world of the book, gasping and flailing. Calamity is especially strong in that aspect. Where you can’t believe what just happened. The ending is like….*eyes wide with mouth open*
😀 The Reckoners was really an awesome series.

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Would You Read This? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 6 years, 10 months ago
@waterlily 😀 Yeah. That sounds like a pretty neat idea.
The seawyrms sound quite interesting, too. The crests confused me at first, but I realized you could do something like having a way in the story to manipulate pigments in their scales and cause certain colors to bleed through, and to make the crest, the colors are manipulated in a certain…[Read more]

@jane-maree There’s not many characters I like more than Kal. 😀 He’s storming wonderful. That chapter in Way of Kings with Amaram and the Shards… *starts banging head onto table and clenching fists* …was rather moving.
XD It’s funny how they all rhyme like that. Their names could be a poem

Yeah, that’s a good idea 😀
You can show how close to dreaming science and math actually can get, to start with. Some of the world’s greatest scientists unfolded some of the greatest secrets in the world because they were dreamers, and dreamed beyond what others thought was possible. And then made discoveries no one thought…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 As long as it’s a somewhat expansive story, where all 3 have things to do, no, that’s not too many 🙂

@jane-maree *wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee*
The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series 😀
The Way of Kings completely wrapped me up in a highstorm when I first read it. The world of Roshar, with the highstorms and landscapes and animals and Shardblades and rechargable-battery gems felt like fantasy perfection. Plus Kal. Kal, and…[Read more]

Hm, well, if you’re looking to do something different, third person limited is probably the best way to go. I wouldn’t recommend 2nd person, which is sort of un-doable in novels. There’s always third person omniscient, but I’ve never actually written in that.
If you’re focused on a story that has a lot of new aspects for you,…[Read more]
