@DelightinLife, prose is also, at its simplest, whatever is not poetry. Except prose can be poetic (for the record, there is no such thing as a ‘prose poem’), so as with many simple things, it’s not easy. So essays, stories, novels, lots of plays, letters, if they’re the kind of thing that uses paragraphs, they’re prose.

@Emma-Flournoy, I’ve read it! I have it on my shelf, actually. I used to read it for fun, before I knew I was a writer. And some of the bad humour is stuff I didn’t understand until I went to college, so it’s probably safe for young folk as long as they don’t go quoting stuff they’re not sure about. (It is quotable, which is unusual for its category.)

Maybe it’s just because I’m recovering from Harry Potter at the moment, but I like the twist of the giant snake being friendly and worthy of trust. I’ll be trying to rewrite a chunk of my novel this afternoon, if Life and lack of motivation get out of the way.
