Northerner replied to the topic A Name For Rodyn in the forum Characters 7 years, 10 months ago
@PerfectFifths maybe it’s been done too many times already? And since he’s already a Robin Hood kind of character. . . Though I am awfully fond of the Disney Robin Hood.

@PerfectFifths, that’s a good pun! If he had a friend who was somehow related or compared to a staff, whether his name was related to the word, or he was tall and thin, or very faithful, that would be a fun joke to have in the story (@ethryndal, I hope you don’t hate puns. . .).

@Daeus, I got about 650.

@Daeus, I should be working for the next hour. (Working being writing-related, though not necessarily getting new words down.)

Northerner replied to the topic A Name For Rodyn in the forum Characters 7 years, 10 months ago
Ohh, I have a character like this! Only you can’t steal his name.
Is Rodyn an official leader of some kind? Then you can start with Captain or something like that.
Or you can go with something the opposite of what he really is. Something the people he terrorizes call him. Like “Dread Pirate Roberts” (no one would be afraid of the Dread Pirate Westley).

@Dragon-Snapper Here’s a prompt I turn to when I’ve got an emergency like that on hand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6ZQ8C5RHtQ. Watch and listen to the video. That should do it, if you’re at all into fantasy.

@Hope, yes, he was throwing out word combinations for you to use.

@Hope:
” ‘UNlimited Intelligent TechnologY.’ Sell it to the public like that.”
I think that’s a pretty good idea myself, but to be clear it’s not mine, it’s Isaiah again.
Is this Scarlet Rose or the other one? -
Northerner replied to the topic Government Conspiracies in the forum Sci-Fi 7 years, 10 months ago
@Hope, so I asked Isaiah about it and this is what he said:
The tracker could be produced under the brand name Unity, but have a deeper meaning in the government acronym. I therefore suggest something along the lines of ‘Unlimited Nanotechnological Ingestable Tracking sYstem’. (The government often sacrifices the rules of standard…

Northerner replied to the topic First or Third? in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 10 months ago
I started a book (and am hoping to finish it) which has two main characters, each of whom has a first-person point of view. They alternate scenes and chapters and I think they do have pretty distinct voices. Only when you have both of them talking about the same happening, it gets pretty tricky — how to tell it without being too repetitive, and so on.

Oh, and when I saw the thread title I had a feeling it was you who started it. Not sure why, of course.

Yes! The idea sounds perfect! Olivia’s rabbit Polly was microchipped, and my mother’s horse is (which is good, because she does have an unfortunate tendency to run away when she can), and I think one other of our pets is. I have heard the idea that microchips for people may become a possibility, and what with the current trend of imitating…[Read more]

Is this the one that you posted the beginning of a while ago? Because I really liked it, only I think I’m going to be too busy to beta-read anything of length.

@Ethryndal, my family watched our movie a week ago. . . Epic, lent us by some friends. After being gone last week we were kind of too tired for staying up and watching movies last night. My father also had a dissertation with a looming deadline to be working on.

Northerner replied to the topic Ghosts in Christian Literature in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 10 months ago
@his-instrument, that. . . can I call it mythology? That system seems to work pretty well, except for what Daeus pointed out. The reason given for the existence of ghosts is convincing. How much of a part will ghosts and the ideas behind them have in the story as a whole, or don’t you know yet?

Happy New Year! My family ended up doing exactly nothing for New Year’s, but on the bright side, none of us are unusually tired. . .
And I wrote not quite 90,000 words last year. Hopefully this year is another good writing year for all of us! -

Is it a walking stick he’s holding or a last? It certainly doesn’t look like any weapon I know of. I can barely see the girl’s face as it is, so it’s hard to tell her age, but I like the picture with her better — it helps to have something in the background. Covers where there’s a dark background and a single figure have a tendency to look…[Read more]

@Daeus, is there a way you can put the cover image itself in a post? I can’t go to it by the link because it wants me to log in.
I understand dilemmas with covers, though. My sister and I are working on one right now and we keep running into things. -
Northerner replied to the topic Writing as a Christian in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 11 months ago
Can I ask what you mean by “purely Christian”? Because I know what is usually meant by “Christian fiction” and I know lots of excellent books that could never fit into that category which were nevertheless written by Christians and are good on their own merits, and I’m quite familiar with secular fiction (some of which actually isn’t half bad. .…[Read more]
