Northerner started the topic Call for beta readers in the forum Novel Critique Requests 7 years, 9 months ago
I have a novel I just started sending out to beta readers, and I got six of them, which is a handy number. But all of them are busy, and the pace of a chapter a week is too much for them (and, I confess, I fear it will become so for me too, as we get to the second half of the semester). We’re only three chapters in, so if anyone wants to jump in…[Read more]

Northerner replied to the topic The Fears of a Writer in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 9 months ago
I’m afraid of losing my work. That’s happened before and it’s awful.
I’m also afraid of publishing a book and finding typos in it, or publishing it and later really wanting to rewrite it.
I’m afraid of yielding to pressure to write things because they’re popular, and giving up my own voice and what interests me to please others.
I’m afraid of…[Read more] -

@ethryndal, I saw in a thread that you’re reading the Silmarillion, and didn’t want to derail the topic. I have read it, more than once, and enjoy it, so if you want support, feel free to talk to me.

Northerner replied to the topic Sci-Fi, Dysopian-ish book. Anybody familiar with writing that? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 7 years, 9 months ago
No love triangles.
That’s all.
Well, generally, try to avoid cliches of the genre if you can. Or twist them and make them new. I haven’t written dystopian or sci-fi myself. Oh, and if you’re into linguistics at all — a dys-topia is a bad place, just any bad place in general. If there was a Greek word for “post-apocalyptic gray concrete…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper, sorry, I’m getting off really soon here. The internet went out for a bit so when I was going to come here and see if anyone else was writing, I couldn’t. No internet distractions meant I wrote fast, though.

@kate-flournoy
Oh my. What an honour and what a responsibility. Easter’s suddenly very close, isn’t it? I’ll try to remember as we get closer to the date, and pray for your practicing as well as the actual day. Sometimes practicing is where you make all the mistakes, at least in my limited experience. -

I’m off now, in case anyone sees this — 713 words in about 20 minutes.

I’ll be writing for a bit, if anyone else is interested. No set time today, just as long as my hands/head can keep going.

@Daeus, do you really want my essay contra e-books? It might not be a moral reason; it’s certainly an aesthetic one. In its shortest form (and you’re welcome to ask for clarification), e-books cheapen the value of books (the medium is the message), and when you take away the appeal of books to our other senses, you lose something of the beauty of…[Read more]

@Daeus, I object on principle to things like Kindles and e-readers, and have argued against them for quite some time, so to make my books available to read in those media strikes me as being hypocritical. Also, since I write historical fiction, a fair amount of my general readership will be, well, older. I’m not going into this in order to get…[Read more]

@Daeus, suppose a self-published authour only had printed books, and didn’t provide online or downloadable options. Would that lose a lot of money?

@Daeus, he’s making fun of Lord Byron’s “The Destruction of Sennacherib” which is Romantic poetry with the usual touch of the melodramatic, though it sounds nice when you say it aloud, and using that to make fun of overuse of metaphor in general. But he’s drawing on allusions to Hamlet to do it.

@Northerner Aw, thanks. I’m not very far into it yet, but I really like it so far. It’s just one of those books that you find yourself rereading paragraphs several times to make sure you got everything… so yeah, you probably will hear from me again on this subject in the not-too-distant future. 🙂 Thanks so much for the offer!
