Hmmm…
Synonyms for master in this case could be: Mentor, advisor, guide, counsel, teacher, trainer, sage, tutor, guru, chief, elder. Maybe, if there is a lot of formality, you could come up with some other title, like calling the master’s “Father” since they’re teaching them the skills, or whatever.
Synonyms for apprentice (if you’re also…[Read more]

@Dragon-Snapper uhhh… hm. Is… would it be possible to simply skip the titles altogether and simply let it be implied in their relationship? Or is it too much of a systemic thing?
And I may or may not have just had a minor heart-attack trying to imagine myself as an ESTJ… *shivers* XD -

When it comes to things like this, I think that you just need to do what your heart says is right. The Holy Spirit will guide you. Just trust in him.

@ryanna I wouldn’t be the one to say whether or not that is cliche. However, the one thing I do notice is that you haven’t described to me a plot. You’ve only described to me a setting.
What’s most important for stories that have unusual settings is that those setting have thematic purpose. What advantage does having intelligent animals on the…[Read more]

@Ryanna good question. I have no idea. XD Plot is not my strong point either. I shall quietly stalk this topic and learn all I can.

I thought I’d pop in here because I noticed somebody touched on my pet peeve.
So, I totally agree that there are times when we’ll be puzzled as to what the right thing is to do and in those times we’ll simply have to act on our conscience. However, that’s not a situation you want to be in. It’s much better to be a Berean before hand and search…[Read more]

@LifeofKatie yep. I need to study this some more as well.
Thanks for getting us thinking, @His-Instrument. 😀
@Jadamae good point… -

@LifeofKatie mm… though see now, I’m not entirely sure that was wrong, in Aragorn’s case.
Hm.
*raises eyebrows* Clearly I still have some thinking to do. 😛 -

@aratrea What about The Screwtape Letters? I haven’t actually read the book yet, but my family listened to an audio drama of it, and we really enjoyed it. It focuses on Screwtape trying to train his nephew Wormwood to be a tempter, and encouraging him to try and make his “patient” sin. But Wormwood keeps failing, no matter what advice he takes…[Read more]

@his-instrument Of all the instance of deception you mentioned, I don’t see problems with any of them. Except perhaps the alias one. I would think that a false is probably okay, but I’m not totally sure about that. I don’t think the bible specifically condemns deception and, like you pointed out, God sometimes commands deceptive tactics in…[Read more]

@His-Instrument excellent example. I’ll just point back to what I said in my first post about consequences for every action, good and bad. Did Jean Valjean save Cosette’s life by assuming a name (and history) that was not his own? Possibly. Very probably.
Could God have saved her life anyway if Valjean had told the absolute truth? Yes.…[Read more] -

Well, I don’t mean to be excited by your calamity, but this is a really good subject.
I’m not going to express my whole opinion here, because I want to do some research first, but I’ll say a few things now.
First, a Christian family doesn’t always have to do the right thing. In such a case however, I do think it would be best to…[Read more]

@His-Instrument great questions.
My first thought is that comparing the practice of using an alias to protect one’s life to pretending madness is a little extreme. For one, your name is not who you are. It’s just what people call you. ‘By their fruit you shall know them’, not ‘by their name’.
That said, I believe it’s a fair question and…[Read more] -

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Theme in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 8 months ago
@Allison-Grace *sniffs* They already said it all.
I’ll just second what @Daeus said; you can have as many themes as you think will work, so long as they’re all related and complement each other. For instance, if your primary theme is honesty, your supporting themes could be telling the truth in love and/or telling the truth even when it’s ugly.…[Read more] -
Daeus replied to the topic Theme in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 8 months ago
@allison-grace Absolutely. This is something we cover in our Theme Mastery course.
The one thing you need to understand is that 98% of the time, one of your themes will the the primary theme. You can have other themes that are very very important to your story, but generally these themes will be “supporting” themes to the main theme.
So I…[Read more]
