I was thinking he only has control over his rabbit tunnels. He can navigate the maze and talk to it, but not tell it what to do.

But hey, the labyrinth shifts all the time. We don’t have to picture the same thing unless the characters are in the same place at the same time.

he is going to get at least snatched and tossed in the air, if not savaged like a rabbit, by Soldier. Nobody just “shows up” behind an Ornithiform, much less one who drank lead water and lived. Especially a small thing which looks to be prey.
