Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Cliches of Dystopian Novels in the forum Sci-Fi 8 years, 1 month ago
@jenwriter17 Ha. I actually have a KP Cinema video about cliches in dystopian novels coming out sometime this month. xD So a lot of my “advice” would be in there. I wouldn’t say oppressive governments are cliched because they’re required for that genre, but I would recommend studying classic dystopias like Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New…[Read more]

@pickupyourpenandwrite That makes sense; I’ve been there as well in the past. Do you have a clear idea on what parts of your story you need to improve on?

@sleepwalkingmk Huh. I’m not seeing anything in spam, so I’m not sure what happened on that front. :/
Either way, I like the tension between the character’s plot and thematic goals there. I’m a bit unsure, however, from what you’ve said if your plot goal is really the plot goal of your story. It seems like the protagonist stops trying to achieve…[Read more]

@dekreel That sounds frustrating–sorry you’ve been running into that! Is there a recent forum thread you can point us to where you’ve had this issue? I’m wondering if for some reason the forum software thinks your comments are spam and is trying to remove them from public view.

@livgiordano I second what some other people said that I don’t think you can fully do this without mentioning Christ. That being said, I don’t think you need to fully explore a theme or provide a full message within a short story. As long as you explore several true aspects of the theme & message and are pointing readers in the right direction, I…[Read more]

@Aella yikes… I do not envy you. 😛
Well… oh boy. If this was my task, I’d probably take a mathematical approach, since communication is all about presenting the material in the way your audience is already used to thinking.
First, I would explain the purpose of fiction— how it’s use is to touch people on the heart and make them think…[Read more]

What initially attracts you to subscribe to an email list?
I either know the person or am really interested in the free resource they’re giving out. Or they have a cool giveaway.
What kind of things should I write about?
I’d say it all depends on what kind of audience you’re trying to cultivate. Think about what your ideal audience would like…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 Yess… I’ve been on a bit of a sci-fi kick lately, so here’s what I got in addition to those mentioned.
-Ender’s Game & Speaker for the Dead (the sequel) are my two favorite speculative fiction books of all time. There’s some language in both books, so if that concerns you, you probably want to stay clear of it, but the themes are…[Read more]

@warrioroftherealm ehehe… well they better not be, because I’m using them. 😛
No, honestly, I think they are. But then, so is a lot of other stuff. I’m confident using ‘elementals’ in my work because the system, while it does incorporate elements, isn’t just about elements. In fact the element part is probably one of the least important bits.…[Read more]

@gh24682468999 Good question. There are a number of copyright-free photo sources out there. We mostly use Unsplash and Pexel. If you’re looking for others, Teachable has a great list here:Â http://blog.teachable.com/post/120193329843/the-13-ultimate-free-stock-photo-sites As long as you use a site with copyright-free photos, it’s legal to use or…[Read more]
