Interesting idea… though to some people it might be seen as almost cheating. Because in giving yourself a certain set POV, you’re setting yourself rules to work with. There’s a certain satisfaction to making a scene work in a POV that it’s hard it work in.
Not sure if your average reader would have issues reading that sort of thing, but I have…[Read more] -

Wow, guys, thanks so much for all the help!
@Rosey and @Ezra: my story is definitely more one-character centric, as I’m following my MC on a journey alone, but yet meeting a lot of different people.
@Kate: I personally don’t mind reading either 1st or 3rd, but I feel more comfortable writing in 1st person. Maybe it’s just the kind of stories I…[Read more]

The good thing about 1st person is that you get to know your MC really well and see everything through their eyes. But if you have a large cast and want to switch views occasionally, that might not be the best thing.
I like 3rd person better for most things, but 1st is more to-the-point.
What aspects do you have to this book? Is it more one…[Read more] -

Laser=light
You can estimate (with math) how far the light @ this power @ this frequency will go in *list materials*
Light will spread, It is it’s nature, lasers just stay more in line but it will still do it.
So yes, it is realistic. -

So, I was just working on my fantasy novel and I started writing in 1st person, even though, up until now, I’ve been writing it in 3rd person. I was surprised at first, and then I thought, “Wow, I actually really like how it sounds in 1st person.” So now I don’t know if I should keep writing it in 1st person or not. Maybe I should start another…[Read more]

Loved the title game on the podcast. I’m gonna have to do that with my siblings sometime. 😛
For the mafia one… I was thinking “There’s blood in my milkshake” or something like that. Something to combine dark, gangsta things with ice cream. -

Great job, Sarah! It almost looks like it could be a song.
Don’t enter it in the lyrics contest, though. That would be…. very strange. -

Dang, only one line at a time?

One thing: when you say “He jokes and says He loves me,” it sounds (at first… glance?) like you’re saying that He’s joking about loving you. I had to read it a few times to make sure that wasn’t what you were saying.
But other than that, it’s great! I really enjoyed reading it. I’ve also been thinking about trying out poetry writing, which is…[Read more] -

You know you’re a writer when you have pages and pages of sentences and ideas for stories that you will write someday.

Would Chewy be so neat if he said “There is not enough headroom”?
We love him, and understand “GAAAAAAHHHH!” means that^ Because of body language.
I think that is another thing that makes Starr Wars good. -

You know you’re a writer when you’re on two different forums, and each has this exact topic…
Exactly.

Currently, both sides carry a mix of what we’d consider regular weapons with ‘hard’ ammo (though they are faster and stronger) and laser guns (which really are a thing nowadays…in my book they are better and more expensive than the other weapons). I’ve abandoned the idea of plasma guns, because they aren’t realistic, but do you have any other i…

Good stuff, @kate-flournoy! 1 especially. That’s the thing that in my mind that tip the villain scales to frightening.
The quote was from Josephine Tey’s book, “The Singing Sands”. The speaker is Inspector Alan Grant, one of the most awesome MCs of all time. There are actually a few other observations on villainy and such in The Daughter of Time,…[Read more] -

I’m going to share a quote from a book that really helped me with my villain.
“I find vanity repellent. As a person I loathe it, and as a policeman I distrust it.”
“It’s a harmless sort of weakness,” Tad said, with a tolerant lift of a shoulder.
“That is just where you are wrong. It is the utterly destructive quality. When you say van…
