Hey @Emma-Flournoy! I play piano and violin too (there sure are a lot of musicians on here). Have you read The Door Within trilogy?

I guess a lot of people have been busy lately -including me. Wow, so many good points have been made here. I like them all. I agree with @overcomer… I like the telling in the book. It really works for this story, and it makes for a relaxing, thought-provoking read. I also like how simple (and bold, as you said @Daeus) the characters are.

@Hope It depends on how much is implied and what is being implied. The end of The Giver was implied, but I liked it because the author left it open enough for the reader to decide what happened.

Interesting. “Clinchers” is what my English teacher always called them, but I guess we’ll go with “hooks.” 😉

That can work, but it can easily lead to what I call POV telling (e.g. “I just couldn’t believe she had died. Why did I have to go through this!” *cough cough* Telling.)

No, I don’t think clinchers (if you are, in fact, referring to catchy first sentences) are necessary. But they definitely spark the reader’s interest. I agree what @kate-flournoy said about cheating the reader’s expectations, and her exception…[Read more]

Excellent thoughts guys! I agree with Hannah. I love a book that has good humor in it. 🙂 …anyways, I don’t have much more to add, but I really like the book so far.
