Ethryndal started the topic Fairytale Expectations in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 6 months ago
Guys. I have a question.
When you know that a book is a fairy tale, what do you automatically assume will happen? What direction do you expect the plot to go, what kind of characters do you expect to meet, what plot twists do you expect to happen, etc?
For instance, I always assume there will be a romance.
Also, I wouldn’t mind hearing all the…[Read more]

@Christi-Eaton I really need to read something by that Peterson guy sometime… Or both of them, as the case may be. What’s A.S. Peterson’s A name? But Andrew Peterson, author of the W. Saga, is the guy with all the great songs, right?

@ingridrd Ow… Well thanks for officially breaking my heart. There should be some sort of warning at the beginning about the strong and sometimes fatal emotions this story will produce.
I love the tone. As I think someone already said, it’s very wistful and nostalgic—quite lovely. Quite sad. Beautifully done, mellon nin.

*sighs* I’m staring at a blank screen, trying to start a chapter. I forget who asked me that question…

@dekreel *grabs and shakes you like a rag-doll* YES YES YES. YAY YAY YAY. You will like it better hereafter. SO. MUCH. MORE. And I know how good it is already, even only halfway through. You just wait. The length is so worth it. *pumps your hand insanely* You just wait.
Also, I’ve read Night by Elie Wiesel. It’s so sad, but it’s a good one.

@Emily Hey, I’m a native. I was born and lived there the first few years of my life. It’s my state too, so I can insult it if I want.
Anyway, I stepped in a fire-ant hill with bare feet in sandals there, so my memory is slightly tarnished. But OTHER THAN THAT, it’s great. ;PYup, I’ve watched The Princess Bride. Love it to pieces.

Zikers, I have a love/hate relationship with questions like these. Um, okay. Here goes.
I have favorite book series, and then I have favorite books within that series.
–Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief (book one, series one) and the Son of Neptune (book two, series two)
–Harry Potter: The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows. I also…[Read more]

*gasps* *runs to tackle-hug the dozen or so Webkinz in her closet*
Anyway. Enough of my antics. @ingridrd The story does, as @kate-flournoy mentioned, give off a sort of Toy Story vibe, but there’s a sort of open-ended thrill to it that almost begs for more. And I love, love the way you wrote “Pubby”. The childlike, wondering sort of style with…[Read more]

*blinks* Oh, well, I wasn’t expecting it to be so sad… *blinks again to hide the fact that she’s crying* Okay. I’ll need to read this over again before I can give anything constructive, but otherwise, good story! It’s really well written, and the plot seems smooth and easy to follow.
I’ll come back if I think of anything else.

@Daeus Keep writing it, and if it still feels worthless, stop. 😛 As of right now though, it is pretty cool. His POV is intriguing. I think mostly only writers would understand—at least really GET—a story like this though, not regular readers…
