@dekreel Please don’t feel guilty for having different goals for your writing than other people. It’s fine to write just for fun or as a hobby. Writing with the ambition to be published one day doesn’t make someone’s writing more important than someone who feels the way you do. And God calls everyone to use their time in varying ways, and gives us…[Read more]

introvert_girl replied to the topic Character Name Exchange in the forum Fantasy 6 years, 9 months ago
@dekreel I actually had a character nicknamed Peri once upon a time. Her full name was Perdita. A few other suggestions:
Perrine (This is a French name, and I think it sounds beautiful.)
Persephone (Greek Mythology)
I also had the thought that you could look for names that don’t begin with P, but have a “per” somewhere in them such as Juniper. -

@skredder That’s been one of my fears, that people wouldn’t stick around long enough to see her growth. But I’m glad to hear that seeing the character change helps to make them likable.
@sam-kowal That’s so interesting! I’ve heard about Likability, Proactivity and Competence before, but not Disability. I find that more compelling, actually. It…[Read more]

So I’ve been struggling with this through multiple projects, in that my protagonist doesn’t seem very likable when they’re introduced. In the case I’m dealing with now, the MC has a temper, and says some unkind things about someone she’s irritated with in the opening scene. Do you have advice for dealing with difficult protagonists? Would showing…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper If you feel like there’s too much emotion bogging your story down, your scene sequel ratio may be off. K. M. Weiland has a series of articles about structuring scenes that may be helpful.
If it’s smaller scale that you’re dealing with, my advice is to write the first draft and then do adjustments in revisions, when you can evaluate…[Read more] -

@sam-kowal I’m planning on jumping on the Kapeefer fanfic train, and had some questions about Stan, and didn’t want to make a new thread just to ask. So I was wondering whether or not Stan can fly, aprox. how large he is, and what color he is?

@dekreel I agree with the others, that it could benefit from more tension. I’d also try to think of ways to make the main characters more distinct from each other. This could also be a source of conflict, not that they dislike each other, but that different personalities can create obstacles they have to overcome because they care about each…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 What ethnicity or family background do your characters come from? For O I thought of a lot of Irish or Gaelic names such as O’Neill (though that may not be appropriate for said character.)

introvert_girl replied to the topic How many characters is too many? in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 9 months ago
@ariella-newheart 30 characters may not be too many for a series. My favorite analogy about this, is imagining myself (the writer) having a pitcher of water. Each character is a glass, and I decide how many glasses there are, and how much water I pour into each glass. In a short story for instance, I won’t have a lot of water, so pouring just a…[Read more]

@sam-kowal “No dwarf wants to. . .” might be a good place to start the synopsis? I see what the others are saying. Though I will differ and say I really liked the last sentence. It doesn’t have a huge sense of foreboding to it, so if that’s what you want to go for, I’d change it. But I think it sounds like we’re getting ready to go on a fun…[Read more]

@sam-kowal I actually love the idea of mixing fantasy with advanced technology. (so cool!)
Your synopsis definitely intrigued me! I’m really curious about Limnet and what his role is in all this. Does he build the humans their suits, and/or is he one of the humans going into the arena? -
