@sleepwalkingmk Apologies that I’m just now getting around to this. Glad you’re learning a lot from these lessons. 😀 I like the fact that you’re weaving in a difficult choice for the protagonist into the end of the Venn diagram there. I wonder if you could also include a scene before her character arc which foreshadows that sacrifice scene–but…[Read more]

@sleepwalkingmk Apologies for taking so long to respond to this. I love that story. Aravis’ character arc is probably my favorite in that story, and it’s excellent!

@waterlily This is a tough question, but I’ll try to be as helpful as I can.
Obviously, you want to write the best story possible, and if first person works better for you, that’s a good sign first person might be the best choice.
However, I would offer some balancing points. Sometimes writing in a tough POV can be incredibly helpful. I…[Read more]

@Dragongeek good point… 😛 Just try to find a power that actually fits with the story for a reason. Don’t just go for super-speed or super-strength ‘because’. Think through what would best fit.
What era/type of names are you looking for?

@0-0enyali0-0 @dekreel‘s advice is very solid. Maybe if you have a fight scene that isn’t too long you could post it here for critique.

@Daeus I like that… not as much as Excelsior though.
Ugh. Decisions decisions.
You know what? I’m going to just throw caution to the winds and say go with Excelsior. I can’t think of anything I like better or even as well as. If you can think of a tagline of sorts to go with it though, so it’s more clear what it means and what it’s for, that…[Read more]

@shannon I’m sure there are loads of preserved letters from the time period you could get a hold of to study.

@dragon-snapper @shannon @sam-kowal @kate-flournoy Thanks.
Thanks. The one argument in favor of Excelsior is that people don’t have to know what it means right off the bat. I’m not selling the school, I’m just going to sell courses. (Shannon, Excelsior means “onward”. It connotes perseverance and victory.)
That said, I could think of a few…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic School Name? in the forum Publishing & Platform 8 years, 5 months ago
@Daeus oooh, I really like the idea behind Excelsior, but most people are probably just going to go… ‘huh? Sounds like some weird Latin elitist club or something… *yawns**scrolls past*’
So… maybe something slightly less high and lofty and a little more down-to-earth. (Can’t believe I just said that.) I can’t think of anything right off the…[Read more]

Hi Friends,
I need to come up with a name for a writing school to host my courses under.
I’ve come up with Excelsior Writing School. What do you think? I like it, but I’m not committed to it.
If you have any other suggestions, I’m open to them. 🙂

@gh24682468999 Love this topic.
First of all, I’m a bit on the bolder side of this issue. While I don’t claim to write specifically for a Christian audience, I still think it’s totally possible to share the gospel in your story in an artistic way that, if it offends people, will only do so because of the message, not because of the forum it is…[Read more]

@supermonkey42Â @silverclaw-bonnetfolly Unfortunately, I don’t think we have any way to do that at the moment. I can bring it up in the staff group page though and see if it can be remedied.

Hey, friends!
Just wanted to give you lovely people a heads-up that I will be eating lots and lots of pie and stuffing this week with family (aka celebrating the American holiday of Thanksgiving). That being said, I will have little time to keep up with the activity here, though I would very much like to. 🙂 Talk to you soon!

@gh24682468999 Great question! I think there’s a ton of ways you can point to the truth of the Gospel without bringing it explicitly into your story. In my opinion, though, while creativity can help if you want to have a focus on just the Gospel, I think there’s also a valuable place for using fiction to show the truth of the Christian worldview…[Read more]
