Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Titles are going to be the death of me… in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 8 years, 5 months ago
Hey guys @Daeus @Hope @Jadamae @Gretald @Bluejay @Emma-Flournoy @anyone-else-who-was-on-this-topic, what do you think of the title ‘The Way Not Taken’? I know, I know, it’s not one word, but I kinda like it just the same. I’d forgotten about it until today, when a friend brought it up in a letter that I’d been considering that as a title. What do…[Read more]

@gretald heehee… 😉 Thanks for the votes. I’m still wavering on the fence, actually. :/ I’ll figure it out one of these days.

@gretald I cried; I cry at very few books, but the end of the Wingfeather Saga was one of them. ;(

@gretald See, I wish there’d been an extra line or two to the Giver, to tell me it was real and not just his imagination…even though I am pretty sure it is real. When I read stories, I want to read to the very end, not be left with an implied happy ending but not knowing for sure if the MC gets better or stays dead, for example. 😉

@gretald There’s lots of new characters in the second series. Percy is one of seven characters, so he’s in it (starting with the next book) but not as much. As to are they worth reading…I’m glad I read them once, and they are funny and well written, but I’ll probably not read them again mainly because they’re so long.
I think…I don’t know.…[Read more]

I live about an hour from Columbus. I’m near Clinton county, @gretald. I have read all the Penderwicks!!! I don’t own any of the, sadly….
I will have to try the giver then! Where are you in Ohio? -

@gretald, you are correct. I am from Ohio. My favorite books are the following: Acts of Faith Series, Little Women, The Penderwicks (a children’s book but very cute), The Rose Trilogy. I have many, many, many, more favorite books but none of them are coming to mind! Lol. I have never read those books before, I should give them a try! I’m trying to…[Read more]

Whereabouts in Ohio (if you’re comfortable sharing 😉 )?
Ohhh, yes! I love Little Women and the Penderwicks! Have you read the other books in the Penderwicks series?
I’ve heard of the Rose Trilogy before, but I’ve never read it. Maybe I’ll read it this summer. 🙂
Yeah, a lot of the books I said were fantasy. The Giver, To Kill A…[Read more]-

I’m north of Delaware, about 45 minutes from Columbus. 🙂 I need to read the rest of the Penderwick books; I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

@gretald I really enjoyed Magnus Chase, though it was different. The Norse gods aren’t quite as polished as the Greek ones. 😉 I did read Heroes of Olympus. The writing was good, but I felt like it was too long. So many things happened, but it took forever to get somewhere. Also, since Riordan isn’t a Christian, the lifestyle and morals of minor…[Read more]

@gretald Ah yes, Percy Jackson. I just finished reading The Hidden Oracles and I liked Magnus Chase too, but I still think Percy is my favorite. Rick Riordan is such a good writer…It’s just too bad he’s not a Christian writer. 😉

Do you mean hooks @gretald? That’s what I’ve always heard them called (though there are many names for everything). You mean some sort of exciting first line/paragraph that really catches people’s attention, I assume.
I guess I’m not obsessed with them, since, of the two books I’ve ever written, my novella started off with a setting description…[Read more]

Some of the best authors (like Jane Austen) begin their novels horribly…
What?! @gretald I think the beginning of Pride and Prejudice is one of the very best opening sentences of all time! ‘It is universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a large fortune must be in want of a wife’— what’s left to be desired? 😛
Oh well. To…[Read more] -

@gretald, @dbhgodreigns, and @hannah-krynicki
His main objective in writing this story seems to be to convince others of whatever points he’s trying to get across in his writing.
I agree that Orwell has some points to get across to the reader. We’ll find out what those points are pretty soon. 🙂

Hannah A. Krynicki replied to the topic Animal Farm in the forum Book Discussions 8 years, 6 months ago
@spradlin Orwell is telling the story for his audience. If he was writing for himself, he would vent his own opinions a lot more- think of Victor Hugo’s dissertations in Les Miz. I also believe that he’s slowly working in an allegory. @daeus You’re right that a person who hadn’t heard of communism before would not recognize it, but I think he’s…[Read more]
