Oh, I forgot. Alfred The Great: Asser’s Life Of King Alfred And Other Contemporary Sources. Also, The White Horse King, another book on Alfred The Great. I love Alfred the Great!

I love Up From Slavery by Brooker T. Washington which is actually an autobiography. You can’t help but admire the fellow at every turn. I also have a short autobiography by my great grand father about how he and his family survived the Armenian Massacres and escaped to America. The tale reminds me of the saying, “Truth is stranger than fiction.”

  • Hello Amanda! Glad to have you on the forum! I also didn’t realize you have been with us since the Emag days. That’s so cool!

And hey! You live only about 2 and a half hours from me. 😀

Hello Rolena! Glad to have you on the forum!!!

Well, Isaiah 3:12 talks about judgment on the wicked including children being the oppressors and women ruling over them. At the very least, a woman ruling a nation is less than ideal. But for your story, if the king died and then there is the possibility of it being the princess’s duty to step up and defend her land…maybe until a cousin arrives,…[Read more]

    Welcome to Kingdom Pen, Carilyn!

Outlining has definitely helped me as well, and it’s so awesome you have self-published!

And I know what you mean about struggling with pursuing your goals and yet also having faith and trusting God. Must be an early 20s thing. Haha!

I hope you enjoy it here!

I find outlining very helpful when I am writing, so I have a basic idea of what is going to happen and can build suspense earlier into the story.

I love the Avengers and the Avenger movies! 🙂 Who is your favorite? I really like Captain America, though I’m also looking forward to seeing Ant Man when it comes out on DVD.

How long is the superhero series you are writing going to be? What stage of writing are you on?

Queen are not unbiblical, or at least they are no more unbiblical than kings. Kings aren’t recommended in the bible, but they’re not exactly wrong. Still, in the bible, whenever a king died, he was replaced by a male relative, not female. To the best of my knowledge, the bible teaches, not that women cannot be in authority, just that they should…[Read more]

  • Alright, how about socks. Not just any socks though. These socks could repel anyone within five miles, allowing the person who wares them to continue on his mission unchallenged … as long as he doesn’t pass out.

  • Hi Kate,

I don’t really have much experience with dagger/knife fighting, but I can offer some limited help in that area. A dagger could be used equally for stabbing or slashing. If you are stabbing, you will borrow more form fencing and if you are slashing you will borrow more from broadsword fighting. Of course you will probably be using both,…[Read more]

  • Oh boy, I knew as soon as Daeus saw this post he would be off! I was just waiting for it! So glad we have an expert here to tell us what we don’t know.
    Now I have a question.
Isn’t the footwork employed in fighting with a dagger pretty similar to the footwork employed in fighting with a sword? (A broadsword). I have a fantasy hero who is…[Read more]

  • I have no idea. I know I probably wouldn’t have time for it, though it sounds like terrific fun, because I am so busy helping my little brother with his tomato growing business, helping my family with our log cabin rental business, helping my Dad with his apple growing hobby, canning those apples, helping our cabin guests survive our terror of a…[Read more]

  • Oh good! I’m glad I was actually helpful.

  • Necklaces— a good idea, but somehow to me it would seem to be odd for a male hero. Maybe that’s just me.

Daeus… seriously? That’s the best you could come up with?
    🙂 Haha.

  • Hi Rolena,

I have never heard that if a blacksmith doesn’t make a sword to precise measurements that it will break, but I doubt it. Swords were made in all different sizes. Perhaps if the smith made the blade excessively thin or long, it might break, but I am sure there are a wide range of sturdy designs.

As to a dagger vs. sword fight, it…[Read more]

  • Jumbo Amanda! (that’s all the more Swahili I know:)

Wow! I am so amazed by the multitude of languages you’ve taken on and learned! My family lines have some Dutch in them so I was excited to hear that you speak it! What’s one of your favorite Dutch words?

Yay go violins! For how long have you played?

Ooo and what kind of genre do you like to…[Read more]

  • Daeus,

I’m so glad someone has some expertise on the subject! Might I ask some questions as well?
Would you know… what are the possibilities of a dagger going up against a broad sword and coming out victorious? (we’ll assume that the two opponents are of equal strength and skill) Are there any other downsides to that senerio beside the fact…[Read more]

  • Hmm, well yes, I have more suggestions than I have time to write down, but I’ll start with some basics.

First of all, how much training does the soldier have? If he has just picked up a sword recently then that is a rather interesting situation. Beginners have no idea what they are doing and tend to be wild, aggressive, and unpredictable. This…[Read more]
