Despite tentatively agreeing with my own proposition above, that doesn’t mean I think it’s the final answer. Or that I’d support or use torture. But that’s the only case where I might let a good character use it.
I do agree that the ends do not justify the mean, however, which brings us back to the original question…would inflicting pain in…[Read more]

It’s not “treat your neighbor as yourself”. It’s “love you neighbor as yourself”
Love is tough.
Perfect love requires holiness.

Resolved: It is wrong to torture somebody just because you want information.
Resolved: The end does not justify the means – ever.
Resolved: Personal convictions (i.e. That one side of a war is in the right) is not a crime. Only immoral action is a crime.
Resolved: Not doing can be as bad as doing.
Conclusion: The only time it might (and I…[Read more]

Yes, it’s very grey in some areas isn’t it?
That’s a good quote, by the way.In regards to the ‘treating your neighbor as yourself’, what if your neighbor is a criminal? Obviously you should turn him in— obviously you should see that he comes to justice, even if that’s not what you would want someone else to do to you. How does that qualify as…[Read more]

That makes sense. I agree. I can’t find any flaws in the logic… that may just be me though.
@Ezra-Wilkinson? Logic Master? We need you.

Yes! XD I love that one. And “Thundering Typhoons”.
Though I believe it was “billions”… 😛 -

For the brackets section, as the reader, I want to know why Mairi is acting out of character. The reason must be at least hinted at.

@kate-flournoy That makes it even better. Yes, much better, and I think his best friend should employ some creative magic tricks to stop him – though it won’t be good enough.

Proposition: It would be fine for a good guy to use torture on a bad guy who was breaking laws of combat/morality to find out information to stop such breaking of laws. Let me explain. In battle, generals on both sides might interrogate prisoners to discover what the enemy is doing. But in simple combat, I don’t think it would be right for a good…[Read more]

If anyone reads the Tintin books or has seen the movie, Captain Haddock is my best example of this.

And what’s ridiculous is that he’s so totally messed up, while Tintin is the flawless boy scout. And they’re best friends. XD
And, on a side note, I really love his creative curse-words. He’s expanded my vocabulary in a good…[Read more] -

The little part in brackets towards the end is what you are asking about, right? Well, here’s my opinion for whatever it’s worth.
That part does sound a little clique. From what I see of Mairi’s character, I think her permission should be a little more reluctant. You wrote Your mother made me promise not to tell anyone, including you. I am…[Read more]

Yeah, that tends to happen around here. 😀
You raise good points, @howlingwolf. But the question here is not whether or not torture can be faulty, but is it even an acceptable practice, whatever it’s faults.
I certainly grant you there are problems with the system. 😛

Hey, you raise some good points there, Ezra.
Let’s try this then. Suppose we take someone who is by definition a wrongdoer— a terrorist, for instance, or some general who has committed mass atrocities— unquestionably outside the bounds of what is acceptable in war. Someone like Hitler.
They deserve death. By every definition, they are guilty…[Read more] - Load More
