@emma-flournoy I have to agree with you. Even though I do like BTM, would recommend it, and would watch it again, it’s certainly not a true classic.
@Mark-Kamibaya At the same time, I read some of those critics when the movie came out, and they are certainly exaggerating. Yes, you’ll find stuff to critique all over the place, but I’d still…[Read more]

@Mark-Kamibaya that’s actually the only film adaptation of any Shakespeare I’ve ever seen (actually take that back— Taming of the Shrew, which was great, though in a totally different way as its a different genre 😛 ) but I really, really loved it. Best thing is, I read the play first, and though the movie cut a lot of really long dialogue…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper I’m actually going to stop now. I’d normally keep going, but when I went to write, I realized it had been so long since I had touched this book, that I needed to review the characters before I kept writing. Now I think I understand them again, but with only ten minutes left, I don’t feel like just hacking out a couple sentences.

I’ve also seen Beyond the Mask— I would watch it again, and there were quite a few positive aspects of it, but it wasn’t just wow for me either. The theme was consistent and fairly subtle, but pretty generic. The best part about it was the MC’s arc, which though a little rushed in places was fairly well constructed otherwise. I really enjoyed…[Read more]

@Mark-Kamibaya wow, you really like that don’t you. 😀 I haven’t seen it.
One of my absolute favorite movies ever that I always forget to mention is Henry V. It’s an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play by the same name, and since we’re talking about themes this also handles its theme really well, though more subtly than some. The real villain isn’t…[Read more]

@rolena-hatfield I’m no expert in jousting, but I do think flails were sometimes used in jousts. The advantage of a flail is that it can whip around an opponent’s shield, but they are hard to wield and bad for defense. Anything specific you wanted to know?

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic A Good Joust in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 9 months ago
@Rolena-Hatfield you’re welcome. 🙂 It was either you could unhorse them with a blow to their shield or knock their helmet off. Unhorsing by the shield is most common and most convenient, as the jousting helmet is designed specifically to turn such blows. There is no flat surface to land a solid blow save for a tiny tip where all the slopes of the…[Read more]

@Dragon-Snapper haha, yes. It’s a muscle cramp, not a mental cramp. XD

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic A Good Joust in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 9 months ago
@Rolena-Hatfield I don’t know the answer to that specific question, though I suspect it very much depends on whether it was a formal joust (or even a royal joust) or a rougher, livelier joust hosted by a baron or some other ‘petty’ lord. ‘Country’ jousts were rough and probably a lot less organized. Royal jousts were merely for the show of it,…[Read more]

@Dragon-Snapper basically a heavy, chronic hand cramp caused by perpetual repetitive motion. The motion of holding/moving a pencil… over… and over… and over… even typing can give it to you, though that’s less common. The muscles get weary of being frozen in one position for too long and just seize up. It’s not pleasant. 😛

@Jess oh yes, no argument there— Big Hero 6 was awesome. Much better than Frozen. But Frozen was still very enjoyable.

@Mark-Kamibaya I watched Frozen for the first time just a few days ago and actually really enjoyed it. I was surprised— expecting a typical ‘princess’ story and it was anything but. I recommend it.
