Emma Flournoy replied to the topic Love Triangles— what the Classical Authors knew that we don't. in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 3 months ago
Authors seem to lose sight of what love actually is, and they play it up to be some big emotions thing because the girl is so beautiful and when he’s with her, he feels this tightness in his throat and his heart begins to flutter because she smells like pine needles! *cough* Eragon… *cough cough*
@Ethryndal Oh yes. That drives me insane. I und…[Read more]

@Ethryndal OHHH!!! Yes, okay! That one was just adorable. I’m sorry. 😛 Painful but it was so cute, and the way it turned out was beautiful for everyone. Poor John. 😛 Yes, definitely lots to be admired there.

@Ethryndal yes! I’ve seen the BBC series of it and I started the book, but I hate electronics and it was on kindle, so I’m kinda looking for it in physical format (unabridged 😛 ) before finishing it.
That love triangle was actually not my favorite just because I didn’t care all that much for Pet Meagles, and I was mad at Arthur for falling for…[Read more] -

@Aysia-Serene ha, yes. There’s so much to be said on that subject it’d take whole books. 😛
Perhaps another important difference is that in 2/3 examples you picked, the MC was /not/ the winner of the love triangle, so instead of just being a gushy ending of success, the MC actually has to face hardship and work through it to become a better…

@Ethryndal That sounds like a great theme with a lot of potential! Sounds like your book is on the right track there, and I love that message. Thrilled to hear how impactful the lesson was for you as well!

@ethryndal Woo! Your quote is Loki, in Thor:the Dark World
@winter-rose I have a way of putting forums to sleep, sorry. That was from Singing in the Rain.
Here goes something more recent, I think.
Met him? He lit my arm on fire!

They weren’t running through space. It was kind of an overlay of the characters, pasted over the top of the main ship in FTL travel. I’ve seen it implemented in other places, and I thought it would be a good style on the cover. They actually fade into the background a little, as if to say, “They’re not actually there…” Perhaps I need…[Read more]

@ethryndal At times, but it’s more my fault than anything. I am a…selective reader. I’ve probably begun as many stories as books are on my shelf. 😛

@ethryndal @emma-flournoy @daeus I actually started reading it last summer, and even now the Fellowship just left Rivendell. 😛 Slow reader, no. Sluggish reader, yes.

@Ethryndal Yay! You won’t regret it.
@Daeus is right though…six months is an exaggeration. I’m a slow reader too, and it only took me about a month and a half. It’s not hard if you’re really interested. 😉Congrats for being a slow reader, Daeus. That’s good. *very serious nodding* Every teensy detail about everything we must catch and…[Read more]

@S-G-Dewey I really really like the name Douglas; from what you said I think that could fit him. (I have a brother named Douglas, but I love the name even if it wasn’t one of my family members’. 😀 )
