I second what @kate-flournoy and @daeus said. And, yeah, don’t worry too much about developing voice. I also really like what @ethryndal said: “Voice is the personality behind the writing, and Style is the form used to broadcast that personality.”
With that said, I think the difference between voice and style is that you can…[Read more]

Sci-Fi Tips Part 8
Social science fiction. Once I heard of it I was fascinated.
It’s a broad genre of science fiction that revolves around the effects of technology on society. Accurate technology or science is not needed nor is it the focus. The effects of science and technology are more important to the story.
Probably one of the most…[Read more]

Sci-Fi Tips Part 7
I’ll give the rundown on three more sci-fi sub-genres, and then I’ll begin posting useful randomness on sci-fi (though some of it crosses over into fantasy). Stay tuned!Make fun of it all you want, I’m a sucker for the post-apocalyptic world. A place where everyone is a survivor and no one is trustworthy. A setting bursting w…[Read more]

@DaughteroftheKing in fact… you said something really good that I want to elaborate on, because you hit on an entirely different aspect of the discussion. Without meaning to, I think, but now you know. 😀
See, you can have the most contradictory and duplicitous character in the world and still have them fall utterly flat. They have to live and…[Read more] -

That aside… EVERYTHING IS AWESOME. You already know what I think of this story so I won’t do a full meltdown here. But guys, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale, and this is just… I love it so much. You should definitely read it.

@DelightinLife everything @Daeus said. 😛
I will add that you probably shouldn’t worry too much about developing your own voice, because it will develop by itself as you grow in confidence and knowledge. Especially if you focus in on the more nitty gritty aspects of writing, like the prose itself— what makes prose delightful and engaging; what…[Read more]

@Emily-D wow… what an enormous question. 😛
Lemme take a stab at answering it coherently. First step, I would say, is figuring out the contradictions of your character.
For instance, everyone has something that they want. For the sake of conversation, let’s say I want pie. But then, everyone also has something that they need— and most of…[Read more] - Load More
