Oh…um… Since…Probably 2011, but it was sporadic, short, and limited to a certain forum. I wrote and finished my first serious story (fan fiction) in 2012, and I’ve continued with a passion since then. Aside from abandoned attempt at writing my own fiction in mid 2012, I stuck to fan fiction for most of my writing life, trying…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper Good point. Some of those other sins are really necessary to a plot, while swearings isn’t so much. I don’t think I’d say that swearing can never advance the plot though. My point isn’t to say that swearing is necessary (it isn’t) but that including it in a book is not the same as doing it yourself. So, let’s take the example of…[Read more]

This is one of the three biggest areas of caution when it comes to any form of entertainment, art, or media. And I think that’s because, as others have stated, God takes what comes out of the mouth very seriously.
But we question if when writing if it’s okay to show that “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that w…[Read more] -

It depends on my mood @emma-flournoy
I’ve written on:
Robin Hood
Christmas
The American Revolution
A school play I was in and like several others that I can’t remember off of the top of my head at the moment. What I am working on now is an article about Homer Hickam, the “Rocket boys”, and the movie October Sky

Thanks everyone for the great input.
I thought I’d start off by addressing the big point everyone had about not causing a more sensitive reader to stumble. I agree. Infact, I’ve got about 7,000 words worth of two articles on the subject that I’ll hopefully get published here as soon as I get around to the last revisions and submission. As I’ve…[Read more]

@emma-flournoy That is true. I suppose that one would say about a favorite desert, “This is heavenly,” that makes sense. Then it just goes back to Romans 14.
About what @winter-rose said. Yes, we need to be careful; and this too, we need to be sensitive to whom our audience is. Children don’t need their heads in that stuff. Teens don’t need to be…[Read more] -

On similes using heaven and hell, I think its ok sparingly. The reason I say sparingly is because you don’t want to trivialize heaven and hell into a byword.
Here I must disagree with you, though I’m glad you agreed with me first off.
God specifically tells us not to swear by heaven or e…[Read more] -

Hi friends,
I recently received edits from some friends of mine which caught my attention because they pointed out a few instances where some of my characters used coarse language (and asking me to remove them). It was only a few instances (maybe five or so), but I actually didn’t realize I had that many. Now, simply from a pragmatic perspective,…[Read more]

I’m sorry everybody, we were having a really good discussion and then I got it all sidetracked on dinosaurs. So, Jackson brought up a really good point about the magic being influenced by a cult. Since everyone seems to agree that the series was influenced/ inspired by the…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper Thank you for the helpful questions.
@sierra-r & @kate-flournoy & @emma-flournoy Don’t stress. Children stories are hard. (And yes, there is a deadline, but not till Feb.)
@mark-kamibaya Yes, it is for a competition and yes, I did read your post. Rambling is alright. Sometimes your ramblings can be inspiration for another person.…[Read more] - Load More
