My Foolish Heart
I come to You and weep
Holding every shattered fragment
Of the heart I was to keep
But foolishly let someone take it.
They seemed to care
And told me they’d stay
But when I needed them there
They swiftly ran away.
Is loving someone worth it?
Will it ever end without pain?
Will I someday see the summit?
Is it worth the constant strain?
They say eventually
Eventually, you’ll find them
How do I know what to see?
How do I know it’s not just a whim?
None can see the heart
Except it’s very Maker
Please to me impart
Wisdom to see better.

Beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
It’s crazy that I just happened to write a poem on war and peace as well.
I called it Freedom’s Cost
I look around and ponder peace
As I stand upon a blanket of snow
But I also see a history
That there their blood did flow.
A river of crimson covering the ground
To defend our beautiful land.
A battlefield of sorrow.
Of man destroying man
Bullets flying. Horses screaming.
Men in agony. Repeats again and again.
The copper of blood. The noxious fumes.
There are too many dead for tombs.
Men finding their closest comrade
Limbless, full of holes, or in pieces
Horror clinging to every thought
In the mire of gore ridden trenches
Clinging desperately to thoughts of home
Praying that the end of thier war would come.
Here I live in a land of freedom
Standing on battle earned turf
Yet I know not firsthand of turmoil
Only what’s recorded of others grief
Of grief, yes. But also victory
For now I live in its reality.

This Generation
This isn’t a particularly encouraging poem. But it’s one of my most recent one. I wrote it after a particularly trying night at youth group. The youth group at my church consists of 90% community kids which is awesome but when there’s almost 50 of them and they have zero church background and most have broken/dysfunctional families it can make it… interesting.
How can this creature be tamed?
When left on its own it’s a terror
But if it’s restrained too tightly it will be suffocated.
Everywhere else they have no bounds
Are allowed to explore whatever they please
Then find themselves on treacherous grounds
They want no part in an activity
Unless it involves a screen
Or serves their cries of, “Me Me Me!”
How can they be taught to love,
The joy of serving someone else,
Or find contentment that’s from above?
How to teach them respect
Of property and other creatures
Or to work with diligence?
To keep the strong from arrogance,
The weak from stumbling
And still others from self abhorrence.
Each of their lives differs uniquely
Often with a broken past.
So many young lives tainted by tragedy
How can we heal what’s been broken?
Show them there’s hope in the future?
Or give back all the innocence that’s stolen?
My heart breaks for each I encounter
Most are spiritually blind, maimed, or deaf
Resisting any help we offer
They’d rather lash out in injured pride
Then to take heed to our words
And let Christ mend what’s broken inside
The situation right now feels hopeless
But knowing it could change their eternal path
We stay to minister to these wild souls.

Thank you for reviving this Janelle. Here’s one of my most recent ones:
Another year has begun
And with it a new rising sun
Surveying the year I’ve left
Things I felt. Saw. Places went.
Flying by like a jet plane
Flowing by in a mere moment
A year of mountains and valleys
If meadows and dark gulleys
Of pruning and growth
Of brokenness and health
Standing by my King’s instructions
As I make my way down His path
Undoubtedly it was more than I could take
Yet I was given a strength that doesn’t shake
Despite depression’s dark clouds circling
I discovered joy’s light all conquering
It is most assuredly not fake
And gives hope through each new thing
At times simply existing
At other times flourishing
Periods of great heaviness
But also ones of joyful lightness
Sometimes with lungs constricting
Other times breathes of air filled with freshness
New things. Old things.
Past and present memories.
I pray that if nothing else
I will not stay stuck in this place
I’ll move onward learning from my mistakes
The future is something to embrace.

Love the imagery. I live right next to the sea and was able to visualize it very well. (I must say sitting on the seashore is such a nice quiet time where poetry comes easily to me)
I would repeat what the others said about the last lines but in general it’s a lovely poem. It shows how the mind and soul of the author can feel trapped in dark stormy night but then wake up to knowing the greatness and light of the Lord. I found this very relatable and enjoyed it immensely.

It seems for me I write 2-3 in a week then go another few weeks before I can think up another 😂 they just strike me randomly and then I have to write them down. I usually have a notebook in my pocket but after loosing my last notebook at work a week ago I’m probably not going to do that again for a while. 😝 thankfully I copy them all onto a Google Doc after I’ve written them out so I didn’t loose any.
The funny part was that I’d asked around for a week if anyone had seen said notebook before buying a new one and starting to copy them into it and the day I got the new notebook I came the closest I’d been to finding the notebook but it still remains unfound.
So Nick one of my coworkers came up to me and said,
“So Lilly. I saw a notebook exactly to that description. It was the floor. And it would have been a week ago. It was near your department on the usual path that you take.”
”Really?!”
“Sure was.”
”What did you do with it?”
”Oh, nothing, of course. I left it there.” He said matter of factly and looked at me as if I was crazy for expecting more of him.
I was thinking, What?! Buddy, you just left a piece of my very heart and soul on the floor! But of course I said none of that out loud and in all honesty his actions didn’t shock me. Typical guy (and youngest child). Not my property not my problem. Just the fact that he remembers it to that much detail was the funny part.

Here’s one of my more recent ones:
True Victory
They’ve been promoted to glory
Because Jesus was their story.
They lived a full life of service
And are now in their Saviour’s embrace.
Spent their share of blood, sweat, and tears
And are now free of all pain and fears.
They have passed into paradise
Where sin can no longer entice
We remember of them what matters
Their characters, service, and smiles
Everyone chooses their legacy
By the way that they live daily.
Day to day passes
Insignificant to us
But they stack up into time
Days. Hours. Minutes that were mine.
Do I squander them foolishly
Or set my sights on goals Heavenly?
Where do I give? Where do I take?
What do I do with the money I make?
I cannot live on a whim
I must first consult Him.
The Giver of all life on earth
The Granter of my every breath
The Crafter of my very soul
Who wants my life completely whole
Navigating life is treacherous
But made possible by the Spirit in us
He is guidance. Peace. Comfort.
Wisdom. Hope. Encouragement.
Each little moment of victory
Adds up til one is swept away
Transferred on to after life
Where there is no longer any strife
There all their deeds are tested
With holy fire they are ignited.
This fire decides our eternal roles
To what levels the King will make us stewards.
If our life doings prove mixed with garbage
The inheritance will be average
But if they be precious things
Great rewards the King brings.
So live this life Kingdom minded
Ever on the Truth keep focused
So one day when you cross the line
God can say, “Well done! Child of Mine.”
These beautiful words I crave
And are all I want once I leave
The truly victorious
Will be crowned glorious
Only to cast their crowns
At the feet of the all deserving King of Kings
May each one consider-
Will your legacy linger?
