@Daeus whooo, my eyes are crossing. 😛
None of these are particularly amazing in my very humble opinion, though I do think the second has potential. The biggest problem is the composition— there are no lines to define where graphic meets text, or to organize the whole thing for us so our eyes have to do as little bouncing around as…[Read more]

I have decided that my Dr Who novella would probably be a lot better in first-person POV, so I have decided to basically rewrite the whole thing. Except I have never written anything in first person before (other th…[Read more]

*waves hand around* Yes, yes…I know I said I’d see you all next year, but this is a question that couldn’t wait any longer.
Currently, I’m trying to write a novel. Too many novels actually, which is where this problem came up. You see, I finished Sector One, so I’m trying to write the sequel to it. But I’m 71,000 words in with 30,000 more to…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Would someone please tell me if these first chapters are too depressing? in the forum Novel Critique Requests 8 years, 4 months ago
Identical thoughts to @daeus Good premise, and if the entire story isn’t going to be as dark in the first chapters, you just want to include enough glimpses of light to indicate that. I don’t personally have a problem with dark, depressing stories when there’s a point to them, but you don’t want to unintentionally indicate that’s the type of story…[Read more]

@his-instrument I love the storyline!
It does sound kind of dark. Maybe you could like spread out the dark a little bit…?
Anyway, sure! I’ll read it. 🙂
Someone who has more experience with plot line might be of more use, though…

So, I don’t have any money right now, which means I can’t buy any Christmas presents. For the past week I’ve been trying to figure out how to give my family presents.
And I finally figured out what I should give my sister.
So, she’s basically obsessed with bunnies and has a stuffed animal bunny that she’s had since she was born, and…[Read more]

@daeus – I personally like the cover the way it is, but that’s just because I like clean graphics 😀 if you do add anything though, I don’t think it needs too much, it looks great!

@daeus I see a lot of people who pin pictures for inspiration like that, especially characters. Though I don’t think you can pin someone else’s image and change what the pin links to. But you could probably copy paste a link to your blog in the description of the pin. (If that didn’t make sense I can try and explain it better, lol.) But I think…[Read more]

@daeus – I have a friend who has a “board” called “storyboard: and then the name of her current book she’s writing” – She pins a lot of pictures (like of different scenes in her book, character portrayals, etc.)
I like your idea above about using boards for different characters and they all having the same link going back to your writing.…[Read more]

Joy replied to the topic How Do I Write a Sad Ending?! in the forum Plotting 8 years, 4 months ago
@jenwriter17 Good question! I think you should leave the story with the characters feeling hopeful, even if it’s just a little hopeful, in the circumstances. You character should be motivated to set her wrongs right, and to improve everyone’s image of her, by saving the queen, or helping to save the queen, or doing her part in any way. If you…[Read more]

@daeus I had another question related to your article. In the case of a short story, do you think a character’s yearning should be fulfilled by the end?
@sam-kowal Thanks, that was super helpful! Your first idea sparked what I think is going to be a large element of the plot now. (Character A has a project they need to finish, but because they’re…[Read more]

Yeah, let me think… you need kind of a main point to the story so there can be a resolution
Maybe B has loads of homework to do and has to try to get A to help with it.
Maybe B doesn’t really like A, and doesn’t want to socialize with A, but has to because of the homework.
Maybe’s it’s B’s fault A got sick, and A’s mom is…[Read more]
