@mark-kamibaya Sorry. Nothing to attack. Well, at least, I don’t disagree with what you said. If you read through all the comments though, you’ll find my reasons for why I don’t think it is not necessarily wrong to write something that might cause a particularly sensitive person to stumble. The reason is it’s practically impossible to avoid…[Read more]

Ok, folks. How about I complicate things more for ya?
So I was thinking about the whole audiobook dilemma and suddenly this verse popped into my mind (memorizing verses is dangerous). It was Ephesians 4:29. You’ll probably recognize this verse. It’s the one that talks about not saying corrupt stuff, but being edifying. Now, without going all…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy Alright. I’ve decided to take tonight off myself, but I’ll be back next week.
For anyone else though that wants to do a write-athon tomorrow, I’ll be doing it. I just can’t remember what Kate’s normal times are, so I’ll be making up the schedule as I go.

@rolena-hatfield Ah, yes. I don’t think any of my smilies have that problem, but it’s a good point.

@dragon-snapper Good point. Some of those other sins are really necessary to a plot, while swearings isn’t so much. I don’t think I’d say that swearing can never advance the plot though. My point isn’t to say that swearing is necessary (it isn’t) but that including it in a book is not the same as doing it yourself. So, let’s take the example of…[Read more]

Ok, so for the first one, basically I’m setting up the difference between my MC and this other character (I’ll call him character A). It’s very important that this group of other characters come view my MC as representing their interests and character A as being against them. The impression needs to be very strong so the…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy True.
Now, here’s a related question I’ve struggled with. Is it ok to read curse words from a script? I’m thinking in a play particularly. The trick is, they’re not your own words, they’re the words of a non-existent character, but you’re speaking them out of your own mouth. I know I did a small study in theater during high school…[Read more]

@warrioroftherealm For question one, I’ll answer for the two that I that I feel are important. The other’s I can probably whip up a replacement for. The first is from an antagonist, though not quite villain. He curses another man. It’s not at all necessary to make him appear bad, but it does play an important role as a foil and, more importantly,…[Read more]

No, I’m not sick of it, but I’m fairly busy for a while, so I don’t think I could fit in a second run.

Thanks everyone for the great input.
I thought I’d start off by addressing the big point everyone had about not causing a more sensitive reader to stumble. I agree. Infact, I’ve got about 7,000 words worth of two articles on the subject that I’ll hopefully get published here as soon as I get around to the last revisions and submission. As I’ve…[Read more]

@bluejay @jess @dragon-snapper I got 512 written, which I think is my best this week since I was only here for about 45 minutes of my normal hour.

Hi friends,
I recently received edits from some friends of mine which caught my attention because they pointed out a few instances where some of my characters used coarse language (and asking me to remove them). It was only a few instances (maybe five or so), but I actually didn’t realize I had that many. Now, simply from a pragmatic perspective,…[Read more]

Wwwwoooooww… Don’t think the deer will sense something strange and run away? 😛
The book I’m writing now is the only one I’ve ever outlined according to a plan. The other two were just a long list of notes in chronological order. For this one, I tried to plot out all the major plot points in this chart K.M.Wieland has (the yellow, red, and o…[Read more]
