Concerning maps…^This was my first attempt at drawing a map. I did it when I was 12 at a restaurant because I was bored and needed some form of reference since my characters traveled a lot.
^This was my re-draw I did a while later to make things a bit more clear for myself.
Mostly, I draw maps for myself as a reference to make sure I’m staying…[Read more]

@emily Full length novels are typically between 50,000 and 100,000 words (I think the first Harry Potter book was around 70,000 for reference), but don’t set this as a “must have” in your story. At least, not at first. Worry about word count when you’re editing. Get the first draft on paper first and everything will come much easier.
What makes a…[Read more]

Dystopian is usually a parallel universe to ours where something went wrong either in the future or in our history. Usually people associate it with government conspiracies or control (think Hunger Games).

@theacornman Thank you so much!
Are there certain common words Americans use that English would say differently?
How much should I make my character use these? Her parents were American, but she grew up in England.

I’m writing this story about super heroes which takes place in the US, but one of the main characters was raised in England (I’m thinking nearby Oxford but I’m not sure yet) for the majority of her childhood. My question is, how much slang/British English should she use, how much would be too much for any Brit reading it, and is there anyone who…[Read more]

Most of my favorite music videos have a great score and cinematography. I really enjoy playing instruments and taking photos so those are the things I pay attention to when I’m watching a video of any kind.

@mark-kamibaya It is an adventure story. I started it for a homeschool project (One Year Adventure Novel).
@kate-flournoy There’s another two books after Eagle of the Ninth?!?! What are they?
@dragon-snapper The wolf you’re thinking of is in Eagle of the Ninth. His name is Cub in that book, in mine his name is Labereda (Latin) or Lab for short.…[Read more]

How hard would it be to get a publisher? I know it depends on the company and the book. I’m curious if anyone has published a book through traditional methods and what their experiences were.

I have this idea I’ve been working on about a slave girl in an extensive fantasy world of my making (with the help of some sisters… @alia would kill me if I didn’t mention her). This girl escapes (Of course) with another slave that she has adopted as a sister and her pet wolf. Does this sound too cliche? I’m having problems writing scenes that…[Read more]
