@kate-flournoy the mentor is tempted and falls…The hero caves to the bad guy and starts working for him.
I love both those ideas.
My idea of creating a plot twist is fairly simple. What will the reader not see coming? What could never happen? What would destroy everything if it happened? And then I have to do it without destroying…[Read more]

One thing I’ve found interesting is how much telling there is in this book. Almost everything is told, not shown…something I’d normally put down to bad writing, but here it works because it’s the style. It a bare bones type of style, with each character having a particular distinguishing characteristic and that’s about it. And yet, it’s very powerful.

@overcomer That’s funny; I hadn’t noticed all the 3 letter names. 😉
What I can’t stand is unrealistic emotion; when it’s not strong enough or doesn’t seem to flow naturally. That, and the overuse of the word ‘said’.

@gretald I cried; I cry at very few books, but the end of the Wingfeather Saga was one of them. ;(

@gretald See, I wish there’d been an extra line or two to the Giver, to tell me it was real and not just his imagination…even though I am pretty sure it is real. When I read stories, I want to read to the very end, not be left with an implied happy ending but not knowing for sure if the MC gets better or stays dead, for example. 😉

So…a place to talk about the Wingfeather Saga. Mainly it’s ending. @zoe-wingfeather 😉
I thought the ending was good, I just wish there had been an epilogue so that we could have really found out what happened instead of just being left with the hints of what probably did happen.
What do you guys think about endings that just imply what…[Read more]

Hope Ann replied to the topic Clinchers in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 6 months ago
@gretald There’s lots of new characters in the second series. Percy is one of seven characters, so he’s in it (starting with the next book) but not as much. As to are they worth reading…I’m glad I read them once, and they are funny and well written, but I’ll probably not read them again mainly because they’re so long.
I think…I don’t know.…[Read more]

@gretald I really enjoyed Magnus Chase, though it was different. The Norse gods aren’t quite as polished as the Greek ones. 😉 I did read Heroes of Olympus. The writing was good, but I felt like it was too long. So many things happened, but it took forever to get somewhere. Also, since Riordan isn’t a Christian, the lifestyle and morals of minor…[Read more]

@gretald Ah yes, Percy Jackson. I just finished reading The Hidden Oracles and I liked Magnus Chase too, but I still think Percy is my favorite. Rick Riordan is such a good writer…It’s just too bad he’s not a Christian writer. 😉

I’m assuming that clinchers are catchy first sentences. If so, I really enjoy them. I love picking up a book just to see what the first sentence says. Rick Riordan has some of the best first sentences. Like ‘The Friday before winter break, my mom packed me an overnight bag and a few deadly weapons and took me to a new boarding school.’ But, though…[Read more]

So I was laying down, hoping to rest my eyes for just two minutes, when this idea popped into my head for the name for my street team and I had to get back up and write it down.
Legendaires (a combination of the word Legend and Legionnaires)
Now, what do you think. Honest opinion, everyone. Is it cool, or is it cheesy?
How about a few tags……[Read more]

What does luxooigical even mean? 😉 I like Lightning Team…
I’ve been brainstorming words which include ‘pilgrims’, ‘warriors’, ‘soldiers’, ‘travelers’, and ‘bearers’.

One thing which struck me while reading the beginning of this story is how sound most of the animals’ reasoning seems to be. I’ve read the book, so I know how it ends, but even knowing that, the speeches and talk about overthrowing man seems reasonable and something which would be for the greater benefit of the animals. If I were there, it would…[Read more]

Hey guys, I’m hoping to get some brainstorming help on a name, because I’m coming up blank. See, I’m planning on starting a street team on my site (basically, people can sign up to help market my books…they can join for as long as they want and they get special giveaways and things like that) but I can’t figure out a cool name. I know some…[Read more]

Love it! @winter-rose
Superheroes who’s fears match their powers: one can fly and is afraid of heights; on can control water and hates swimming. (note, not my original idea, it’s from a prompt on Pinterest, but it fit here. 😉 )

I loved it. The prologue was just the right length; any longer and it would be too long but it wasn’t longer. 😉 And I absolutely love the humor. The conversation between the siblings was funny to read, but it did seem to take awhile. Also, when Cerdic asked about the food and Garawyn dumped it from her sleeve, it seemed as if he didn’t know about…[Read more]
