@e-k-seaver Happy to help. 🙂
I chose it largely for the freedom it provides. In the beginning, especially freedom as far as a release timeline goes. I didn’t have to wait to hook an agent, which was important to me then as a young author wanting to get started and is important to me now as an author who wants to share my work without having to…[Read more]

@e-k-seaver First of all, yay! Self-publishing is awesome. XD (So is traditional publishing, I just personally think self-publishing is more fun.)
Second… I feel like I need more specifics as to what info you’re looking for. I love answering questions about self-publishing, but there’s a lot to cover. If you want a place to start, though, I can…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic What writing goals do you want to have achieved by this time next year? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 10 months ago
The main thing is to have completely finished all of the edits on my novel Calligraphy Guild and be able to focus entirely on marketing it for several months before publishing it in the summer of next year.
I also would kind of like to publish at least one short story collection set in the same world, because I love this world and I need to get…[Read more]

@gracie-j Congratulations! That’s awesome! 😀
I’ve taken this week off from CG, but in the meantime I revised a short story so I can work with an illustrator on it! It’s nothing super fancy, I’ll just be working with the daughter of one of my mom’s friends, but I think it’ll be a lot of fun and a cool learning experience! And the short story is…[Read more]

@william-starkey Something on how you build languages and how they reflect the cultures they’re attached to would be awesome, if you have the time. 🙂
(BTW, totally random question but some of the books you’ve added on Goodreads made me curious: Are you Calvinist?)

1. Between 500 and 1,500 words, maybe? I think my posts usually range between about 1,000 and 2,000 words, but I have some that are longer and some that are shorter, so I’m not super picky.
2. Basically. What factors you consider when developing a culture’s fashion (resources, values, etc.), especially. Maybe where you get inspiration for fantasy…[Read more]

I can’t edit my OP, but I remembered after writing it that William is (was?) one of the regular KP writers and now I feel silly for not remembering that he does, therefore, write articles. *facepalms*

Hi! I’m looking for a few writers who would be willing to write about developing fictional architecture, fashion, cuisine, and language (respectively). I’m prepping blog posts for a section of this year that I’ll likely be out-of-town and I’m finding that I have a lot of posts ideas for the intangible aspects of worldbuilding but I’m not so good…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Subgenres–Helpful or a Hindrance? in the forum Fantasy 3 years, 10 months ago
I think subgenres are most useful as tools rather than labels. A huge list like that might be helpful for opening up possibilities you hadn’t considered before (like gaslamp fantasy), for example. Or you could try to identify subgenres that your book falls into once it’s finished and use that information for marketing purposes. If you’re careful…[Read more]

@devastate-lasting Go for it! The worst that can happen is they don’t take it, but then you still have a short story to work on and keep in your back pocket for a later submission opportunity. 🙂

@godlyfantasy12 That’s awesome! 😀
I just finished another draft of Calligraphy Guild! 😀 😀 I’m planning to take a break and focus on a couple of other projects for maybe a week-ish before I dive into the next one. I have two more drafts I want to get done before March, and then I send it off to sensitivity readers to get feedback on the…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic What's your biggest excuse for not writing? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 10 months ago
“I’m not invested in it.” Which I’ve found out is a legitimate issue that there are ways to get around, so yay! (A Teen’s Guide to Getting Stuff Done by Jennifer Shannon is a really handy book.) But yeah, I usually just don’t sit down to do it because “I don’t feel like it,” and then… I never feel like it, lol. But once I sit down anyway and get…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Writing Romance in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 10 months ago
I just want to throw this into the love square conversation… Conflict is great and all, and it drives stories, but stories where the dudes both love the girl enough to realize that the other is good for her (I mean… assuming they’re both actually decent guys, which is way more compelling imo than a love square in which one guy is clearly a…[Read more]

@gracie-j Ahhh, gotcha. That makes some sense.
Hm. I personally love both the movies and the books. But, as always, the books are better. ;D
*nods* That also sounds like a pretty good approach. 🙂

@gracie-j I don’t remember which one I preferred, out of the two. I really need to reread them, lol. I think I read them… prior to keeping track of my reading, it looks like, so at least four years ago.

@seekjustice I wrote a post and then when I edited it it vanished. O-o
My mom was really careful when I was little about anything that featured daughters rebelling against their dads. She didn’t let me watch The Little Mermaid for the same reason (which I don’t mind; I’m not a fan of Ariel now that I have watched the movie, lol). Once I was a…[Read more]

@seekjustice My mom was really careful when I was younger about things that featured daughters rebelling against their dads. I wasn’t allowed to watch The Little Mermaid for the same reason (which I don’t mind; I’m not a huge fan of Ariel now that I have watched the movie, lol). Once I was a little older (10-12-ish, maybe?) she thought I’d be…[Read more]
