Well, I’ve heard smidgens of your story. I know it has to do with VR, based on your drawings.

Resistance by Jayle Knight, I think uses the second method. It is only when the protagonist is able to trust people again that he is able to join, help the Resistance, and save Kyrin’s family (Kinda). (I am finally back!)

@catwing I’m working on my sequel to the book I just finished. Writing the first ten chapters is always difficult for me.
