@audrey-caylin Good question; sounds like I didn’t make it clear enough. The idea is to share something like a plot outline where you briefly sketch out each of the major five character arc scenes with a couple sentences and explain how you plan on sketching out the big-picture view of your character arc.

@Audrey-Caylin Thanks for welcoming me. Hopefully, I can figure this online community out 🙂 I have been astounded by the responses so far– I didn’t think so many people would notice me, and you all seem great. Thanks for suggesting that I join. Do you have any suggestions about what to do now?

@Audrey-Caylin We’ve all made that mistake at least once before. 😉
@Gabriellemassman Mae Govannen, fellow INTJ! It does my heart good to see another of my rare personality type. I hope KP will be as much of a blessing to you as it has been to me! I’m going to go read that poem now so I can redeem my name of Tokien Geek…

@audrey-caylin Ha; that makes sense. There is a fair bit of overlap between these two questions. And that’s awesome. The more you as an author see your characters as real people and write like that, the more your readers will see them as real people as well. Glad to know I’m making people excited about homework. 😉

By ye olde order of the Snapping Dragon de Pen Kingdom, there shall hence be a new order, a challenge of lances and swords and weapons of great valour. *peasants yawn* All ye, I bore ye, but not so anymore!
I humbly give the Kingdom’s thanks to @sierra-r , who introduced us to ye olde test of knowledge in our lexicon. It gaveth me-eth the idea to…[Read more] -

@audrey-caylin Great thoughts! I absolutely agree–bad experiences are absolutely motivational in forcing us to change. It reminds me a lot of what Peter says in his first epistle about how God uses suffering to refine us.
And that’s a great example of a “real life character arc” so to speak. Honestly, I’ve found that understanding experiments in…[Read more]

@kate-flournoy That looks great! I could see the transitory Experiments being either full-fledged Experiments, or just part of the middle Venn diagram section of the two opposing Experiments in Living. Kind of depends on how marked his change is. But yeah, that looks like a great way of handling the disillusionment arc.

@audrey-caylin Haha, well sounds like my examples were extra-effective then. 😉 Yes, the process of developing character’s experiments in living may very well give you new insight into what your theme actually is. Another thing to keep in mind that we’ll be addressing later on in the series is that many books may have multiple themes, so you may…[Read more]

@daeus Man, three themes at once… I guess you always have been an overachiever. 😉 I like the idea of using two themes as supporting/complementary themes to the main one. Moving your protagonist to a different EiL each time could work; the one challenge would be picking experiments where it does represent a positive arc (even though he’s ending…[Read more]

@audrey-caylin I’d like to hear anything you’ve learned from working on a trilogy. this is my first one.
The three themes will be tied together. The personal theme is the meaning of life, which is also the main theme. The two others are supporting themes, so the understanding of atonement and the victory of good lead to an understanding of the…[Read more]

@audrey-caylin Yeah, I think it pretty much comes in the job description that authors need to enjoy putting themselves in their characters’ shoes. 😉 People watching is a great way of analyzing how people react in different situations. And I’m going to take a bet that @kate-flournoy is going to be joining you in the Myers-Briggs boat of delving…[Read more]

@Aratrea Well, after three days of pondering, I’ve finally figured out the theme of my novel, which I’m currently editing. Here we go:
Theme: The intrinsic worth of humanity
Focusing Question: What gives a person value?
1. If they’re useful to society
2. If they have great social appeal (beautiful, smart, funny)
3. If they’re good
4. If they’re…[Read more] -

@audrey-caylin That’s awesome! Glad to hear that the lesson helped you so much!
One thing you could do with your story’s message is to expand it by offering a reason for hope (e.g. “There’s always a reason to hope because _______________”). It somewhat depends on what type of story you’re trying to write, as a reason isn’t strictly necessary,…[Read more]

@audrey-caylin Awesome! Glad to hear that the lesson sparked some creative juices! 😀 I haven’t read A Time to Die yet (it is so high on my reading list, but time keeps alluding me…), but that seems like a good analysis of the book. The message doesn’t seem too broad to me (though to be fair I haven’t read the book yet), but it could be a bit…[Read more]
