I’d definitely have to say that I look up to my mom a lot. She has values and strengths that I really admire, and if I could do half of what she does, I’d call myself extraordinary.
I now see why most superheroes have flat character arcs! -

@Aratrea I’m afraid I’m lacking in knowledge here 😛 I can’t recall a story I’ve read (or movie I’ve watched) that has a really good negative character arc. In my opinion, the Hunger Games has a disillusionment arc, but besides that, I have no idea. Do you have any suggestions for books that demonstrate good negative arcs?

(and rather terrified to ask around, to be honest, since this is my first time 😛 )
Does anyone here know of people who like to beta read? I’m searching around various writing communities to find some kind volunteers who want to give me honest feedback on my novel. I’m intending to send it out on the 20th and get it back on April 1st.
It’s YA…[Read more]

@Aratrea I get it now! Thank you for clarifying the difference between the thematic mashes and the plot points. I could never quite understand them until now 😛
And that sounds like a good way to figure out what sort of character arc it is. I guess I’ve never written a negative one before *runs off to experiment with one* 😉

@Aratrea Thank you. My protagonist does have quite a bit of internal conflict, and her problems aren’t completely solved right away.
Hmm…I see. I make the ending more of a realization moment for her, rather than a complete “I-will-always-put-my-hope-in-God” moment (thus leaving room for a sequel 😉 ).
Regarding negative character arcs, is it…[Read more]

Life didn’t want me to do my homework as much as I wanted to 😛 But here’s what I have:
Overview: protagonist is trying various methods of avoiding hopeless during the hardships in her life. Her first experiment is pretending nothing is wrong, the second is relying on other people to keep hope, and third is relying on God.
Characteristic Moment:…[Read more]

@gabriellemassman I think you’re good. The places K.M. Weiland has on her site look great as well.

@aratrea I have a question: how does this work? Do you post your plotted-out scenes, or what happens to the character, or…?
I’m working on refining the character arcs I have for my current novel, so I’m just picking them out of the novel for this homework and learning what they are. Do I post the scenes?
Sorry, I’m a little confused 😛 (and…[Read more]

Ice cream???? I’d rather have limitless ice cream supplies than good vocabulary! 😉
I’m below average, but since I’m not an “adult” yet, I guess I’m doing okay. I’m going to have my family take this test though 😀

I would definitely have to say what I did last time: bad experiences. Especially humbling moments when I realize “well, those were a bunch of stupid choices. I can’t believe I didn’t see that earlier” I think God likes to humble me that way 😛
I’ve taken to doing that to my characters as well, which is easier, since I can absolutely relate to…[Read more]

I agree with @Kate-Flournoy for the mental gymnastics. I’m excited but daunted to do this with my other main characters. 😛
Start: Protagonist believes she can overcome any hardship by simply pretending nothing is wrong. She thinks that if she doesn’t let others know something is wrong she won’t feel any pain from the events happening around her.…[Read more]

THIS LESSON WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I know I say that every time by it’s true 😀 )
I think that bad experiences cause people to change. If something bad happens to them for a specific reason, they aren’t going to want that to happen again, so they’ll change. Or, perhaps they’ll hear a story of someone who lives how they do and something “bad”…[Read more]

Thank you @aratrea! I did wonder about having more than one theme in a novel.
Yes, I did forget to include that 😛 Things like that do happen, but perhaps I’ll build off it a bit more, as that would be a wonderful plot! (well, bad for the character… 😉 ) Thank you!!!

@daeus oooh, you’re doing a trilogy? I’m currently working on one myself 😀 I’ve decided to keep an overarching theme of HOPE throughout all three books. However, I focus on different aspects of hope in each one, such as hope through hardship, hope for forgiveness, and hope for redemption.
Your themes got me thinking of A Time To Die, by Nadine…[Read more]
