Hey guys, so I was wondering how to incorporate magic into stories. The bible clearly stares that magic is evil, but its kind of hard to have fairies without magic. So what do you guys think about it?

@Aratrea Well… Hmm. I wouldn’t say the lessons have been focusing on physical conflicts rather than mental conflicts. It’s just the matter of tying the theme to the conflict. Something like your example of fear and courage is pretty easy to show through conflict. You can show a character running and hiding at the beginning, then standing up and…[Read more]

@aratrea hmm… I think it has to do with me foreshadowing how everything is about to fall apart, introduce a character that will be important later on, and just pass a little time until everyone starts to “travel” to where the protagonist finds the “stranger.” It makes a little more sense in the novel, but I’ll keep an eye on that scene *glares at it* 😉

@kate-flournoy He deserves to be a favorite, the poor guy.
And… I’m not going to use my trilogy for this lesson. It needs major thematic work and I’m not worrying about it right yet. Well, I am, but not here… Anyway, this is for the other novel I’ve mentioned. The one with the positive character arc where the MC’s experiment in living is…[Read more]

@aratrea the main theme is forgiveness, but the supporting theme is truth. Basically, the protagonist is on a search for the truth about things in her life, and makes a mess of things. She believes that the truth is she’ll never be able to fix them, be forgiven, or be redeemed, thus the main theme of forgiveness. Or you could call it redemption,…[Read more]

Reposting this… cause I thought I posted it but it isn’t showing up. So of there end up being two of these posts, that is why.
@aratrea Hmm, yes. I think I remember that now. The last video I watched was on matching the character arc with the plot arc so that might have had something to do with it. Anyway, I reworked it. I’m pretty happy with…[Read more]

I’m pretty happy with the disillusionment now, though I’m not quite sure how well the postive arc flows.
Round 1: The Disillusionment Arc

This is a disillusionment arc which spans a trilogy. Or rather the first two books and the first quarter (probably) of the last book before shifting into a positive arc.
The MC’s experiment in living is that good will always win and victory over evil here on earth is inevitable so long as one gives their all to the fight. Her experiment in living…[Read more]

@aratrea Is one able to have a negative character arc apply to the antagonist? The Negative EiL to a worse EiL, or would a flat character arc work better?

@aratrea Would be against the rules to say your example of Star Wars episode 3? That one really is a great example, the catharsis with Luke and Leia was perfect. I think I like that movie better now that I understand it better.

@aratrea Yes, it’s for a positive character arc for this one character. There is a second book as well, so I have to keep that in mind…by that I mean he uses it negatively in the first book and positively in the second.

@aratrea Yay! As I go, I am tying everything together with the plot, so that the theme and pride within this particular character is running along with everything else. I am so excited with all this! Thank you!

@aratrea Just thought I’d let you know that I rather unexpectedly came down with the flu, and won’t be able to participate in the theme q and a today. Terribly sorry about this. -_-

@aratrea
Again, the theme is pride. (I’m just going to use that one as the practice one, because posting all seven of them might take a long time… 😛 😀 )
Experiments in Living:
1. Pride’s okay, as long as it doesn’t spread or grow to arrogance
2. My pride is my identity
3. My pride is uncontrollable, so I won’t control it
4. My pride is bad,…[Read more] - Load More
