Take one major character who’s neither the protagonist nor the villain and figure out how that character relates to your story’s theme. Develop a character arc for them and determine which of the three paths they’re going to follow and how that path will best complement your story’s theme.

Choose your favorite villain in literature and examine why he’s such a good villain. Which of the three roles does he represent with regards to that story’s hero? And how does he seem to inwardly justify himself? Post your results here!

Consider how the villain’s the best person to challenge the protagonist. Then, decide which of the three roles he’s going to fall into. Finally, develop his Experiment in Living and his basic defense of that Experiment.

@widdrim Hey, another English/literature major! Welcome aboard. 🙂 Have you ever read Owen Barfield’s Poetic Diction? That’s the extent of my knowledge on linguistic drift, and it was a bit speculative at times, but it was overall a very fascinating read.

@kate-flournoy Wait, so the MC and his wife are both fighting on different sides of the war? You’re a cruel author. 😉 So it sounds like both of them are similar in powers and EiL, and the only distinction is what side they’ve chosen?
Ah; yes. Good example of that character type.

@kate-flournoy Oooh; I like it. Very nice way to alternate between two different perspectives there to create a rich dichotomy and irony. Both supporting themes seem particularly well-mixed in the last section, where morality is tied into hope. Well done.

@audrey-caylin That kind of foil setup can work really well for a story. Do you have any favorite examples of that in stories you’ve read?
