@aratrea
I’m starting to see that it’s all tied into respecting authority. In the second case it’s respecting the authority a ruler has to bring judgment or offer mercy. Recognizing that they have the right to make such decisions and we shouldn’t fight it or run from it. Accepting forgiveness certainly as a part of it though. -

@Daeus Government doesn’t quite fit fit. It’s more about the law that the rulers and honouring parents is part of it. Maybe it’s simply authority.
As far as mercy goes it’s more about receiving mercy or even about justice. There’s even bit of self-sacrifice, returning for the sake of others even though you don’t expect mercy yourself.

@Daeus That would be good.
Can you do good while deceiving or being in rebellion to authorities?
Once you’ve messed up is there are chance of return?

I’m having the difficulty of too many WIPs to choose between. I need to do this for a b ook that’s in draft two and has a couple of sequels coming, but it’s giving me a headache. I can’t come up with a definite theme, but I’ve found two focusing questions. The story goes through a strong deception-rebellion-failure-repentance-redemption…[Read more]

I decided to tackle something complicated. But I realized that the two protagonist actually face differnt aspect of the same root trouble.
Story: Resistance by Jaye L. Knight
Theme: Rejection and persecution. (I can’t find a single that conveys the idea perfectly)
Focusing Question: How do you deal with being hated for who you are or what you…[Read more]

I’m wanting to learn how to write a more impactful and enjoyable story.
I’ve had some kind of theme in my writing before, but I haven’t been using it very powerfully or interntionally. Especially in my recent writing.

Anna Brie replied to the topic Discussion for Video Two: The Importance of Theme in the forum Discussion Questions 7 years, 9 months ago
I’ve tended to confuse message and theme. What I thought was the theme for my first book, was most definately a message. Yet I held onto it somewhat loosely and some other themes developed along the way, so I don’t think it came across too strongly.
As far as the plot vs. character problem, I never really saw it, but I have read a lot of K.M.…[Read more]

Everyone else has said most of what I’ve been thuniing. But I want to learn how to make more impactful and widely enjoyable stories. I’ve had bits of theme, but I don’t think I’m using it very powerfully.

@aratrea @daeus
How does this work if multiple people in a household want to look at it? I wouldn’t do it on my own, but I’d like to go though it with Gideon.
I was going to try to teach him what little I knew that could improve his writing and this seems like it would be so much better. Great job guys! -

@Kate-Flournoy I’m a big MBTI fan. I used to think it was all bunkum, but I have a friend who uses it a lot and I ended up figuring out how it actually works. I’m probably an ENFP.

Anna Brie replied to the topic How to Create Good Conflict in the forum Plotting 7 years, 12 months ago
Conflict is really when two people cannot both get what they want. If both sides want something only one can have, There’s conflict. If they want opposite things, also conflict.
What really makes conflict engaging, is the stakes. It’s not what you character wants, but why they must succeed.(I’m quoting Tosca Lee here.) In other words, why they…[Read more]

@perfectfifths Welcome! G’day. Yep, I’m another of the Australians. From NSW.
Did I hear you mention the Ilyon Chronicles? They’re some of my favourite books ever.
Also it’s funny that all us Austrlian’s are from different states. We still need some from NT, SA and TAS though. And the ACT, I’d like that because I almost live there.
And I love…[Read more]

@anne-of-lothlorien, yep, I do that. In my current book my MC has a 15 y-old brother who’s an inventor and explorer. He’s not intentionally based off my brothers who are around that age, but there are some strong similarities. Probably less personality wise than in other things, since my brothers are different form each other in that.

Could you all pray for my aunt and uncle. They’ve been having marriage problems and are talking of separating to the point of putting there house on the market.
They’re nominal Christian’s who don’t go to church, so we’re trying to get through to them on that front. We’ve been trying to for years, but now it is more urgent.

@Sarah-H Polictics in Australia is a bit complicated at the moment. Both of the major parties are becoming more radical. The ‘convervative’ party is in government at the moment, but our Prime Minister really ought to be in the other party. Also the senate is very hostile, and there are numerous people from strange small parties. More than there…[Read more]

And Having something prepared also sounds like a great idea.
