@amy-l-klob I found a website with boys names in the 1700s that might help out a little! My favorite names on the list for your character are Abe, Amos, Asa, Eli, Ike, Jed, Oscar, Reuben, Stanley, and Thaddeus. Hope that helps! 🙂

I wouldn’t start off with the action right away, although you do need to start off with something interesting, and that’s because of two things. Firstly) The hardship of the protagonist being separated from her normal life and what’s dear to her (which is great, by the way) isn’t, as you said, going to be as impactful unless the…[Read more]

@amy-l-klob I’d recommend starting by introducing your protagonist, but I would be careful about having a slow lead-in to the actual story. You want to grab the audience’s attention in the first page. That doesn’t mean you need to immediately leap into the main plot of your novel, but you should be including some conflict and/or intrigue that…[Read more]

@amy-l-klob You’re very welcome! Yes, exactly! I love how deep it sounds, her normal life being “separated” from her. I have to agree that a good background is essential for that!
Anyway, I’m glad I could help! What is your novel about, if I may ask? (If not, that’s okay 🙂 )

Greetings, @amy-l-klob!!
How to begin a novel. *scratches chin* Hmmmmmm…
It makes sense why you want to do that! The reader does need to know the background of the protagonist.
I think you should kick off the first chapter like right before the action happens, around the time when the conflict comes in. Like, the protagonist is coming home…[Read more]

@amy-l-klob That’s my favorite time period right now, too! I also like any history that has to do with airplanes. I know the “excited puppy” feeling as well. 😀

@amy-l-klob ohhhhh… I like that
I feel like I’m an excited puppy bouncing from scene to scene, my brain storming leaving messes of scattered research notes and ideas across paper and computer hard drive.
It is so acurate. 🙂

@amy-l-klob Aiya! I love history too, but, historical fiction I find can be hard to write… I’ve only attempted two… *shrugs*
But ye shall find that on this forum lots of people are good with writing fictional history, or, at least reading it! (There are a lot of LotR fans, myself included!!!) I can’t say I know much about America’s history……[Read more] -

@salome01w4g @amy-l-klob Aha, I was going to suggest you talk to Hannah. Her story sounds really cool. I don’t know much about the american revpolution but I love reading and writing stories set in WW1. Hannah had started a hf thread but I don’t think we got very far. However, if we have one more hf writer to join our ranks…
