September 19, 2018 at 11:53 pm #76812@seekjustice I’m back. ๐
Okay, modern his-fics first:
Have you read the Viking Quest series by Lois Walfrid Johnson?ย Those have a good deal of romance, but I would say about the level there is in your Infinity series, so not too bad, and they’re definitely his-fics and not romance novels.ย If you’ve read those (or even if you haven’t) you should also try the second series she wrote, called Freedom Seekers.
Robert Elmer wrote several very good his-fic series.ย He’s the one who wrote the Australia books I told you about once, and he also wrote books about WWII and the Cold War.
Aaand…you’re not going to like this one, but Gilbert Morris’s Cheney Duvall, M.D. series is absolutely amazing.ย It’s probably one of the most well-written series I’ve ever read.ย I said you won’t like it because it’s technically a romance series, but my sister read it and liked it, so I think you’d be okay. ๐ย I don’t like the romantic parts of the first two books, but the rest of them are good, and the romance certainly does not outweigh the historical parts.ย The characters are amazing, and there are appearances from true historical figures like Ulysses S. Grant and General Forrest and Fanny Crosby, which are all very well done and interesting.ย Seriously, that series is amazing!

September 20, 2018 at 12:18 am #76813I have the first two Viking Quest books and I enjoyed them when I read them several years ago. Do you know how many more there are in the series?
Oh, I’ve got one of Robert Elmer’s books too!ย A Way Across the Seaย I think it’s called, and I really, really like that one. I’ve never got anymore of his books because they aren’t in print in Australia as far as I know.
All right, I’ll look into those ones too.
The difficulty is that a lot of these books aren’t available in Australia, but I definitely know I can get the Viking Quest ones from Koorong, so I’ll probably be able to finish that series at least.

September 20, 2018 at 12:34 am #76814@seekjustice There are five books in the Viking Quest series.
There are seven more books in the Young Underground series, following A Way Across the Sea, and then there is a series set a few years later which is not really connected except a couple of the characters leech over to make “cameo” appearances. ๐
Aw, too bad. ๐ย Well, when you come to America plan to spend a few days at my house in our library speed-reading all our books. ๐
A couple older his-fic recommendations that you can read online or get on Kindle:
Grace Livingston Hill and Grace S. Richmond both wrote mostly stand alone novels.ย Hill wrote over a hundred, and every one of them is great!ย Some of the books focus more on family relationships, and some of them focus more on the romance, but they’re very clean, with never more than a couple innocent kisses.ย A good book to start on for each of them would probably be The Enchanted Barn by Hill (not in any way a fantasy, in spite of the title) and Strawberry Acres by Richmond.
Of course anything by Henty is great, and you read those online too.ย R.M.Ballantyne has a very similar style to Henty, but was a Christian.
Okay, is that enough for now? ๐

September 20, 2018 at 12:42 am #76815Yep, I managed to find them all on Koorong.
I’ll definitely have to see if I can find the rest of those ๐
I would love to speed-read through your library ๐
I think I had some of Grace Livingston Hill’s books, but unfortunately I had to cull them. Whoops ๐ (But hey, I have so many books that my bookcases are bursting at the seams as it is).
Oh, I like R.M. Ballantyne too! I’ve readย Martin Rattlerย andย The Coral Islandย (at least, I think that’s his book, but I’m too lazy to go check).
And yep, that’s enough. I’ll check those out!

September 20, 2018 at 12:49 am #76816@seekjustice Cool!ย Well, if you get a chance to read the full Viking Quest series, let me know what you think, because I absolutely love that series! ๐
What?!!ย Got rid of Grace Livingston Hill books?? ๐ ๐ย That’s sad. ๐
My favorite of Ballantyne’s books is The Lonely Island, which is a fictionalized version of the story of the Mutineers of the Bounty.ย (Yes, he wroteย The Coral Island. ๐ )
I’m going to go now.ย I’m tired. ๐ย Goodnight!
"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
September 20, 2018 at 1:19 am #76817Okay, I’ll put the rest of the series on my Christmas wish list ๐
I know. I didn’t know she was brilliant. But did she have a daughter who wrote too? It might have been her daughter’s books.
Oooh, the Bounty is an Australian thing!
