June 13, 2018 at 12:20 am #74187Hey guys. I’m on now. π
June 13, 2018 at 12:28 am #74188@valtmy Hello!Β What are you working on?Β How is it going?
"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
June 13, 2018 at 12:37 am #74189That’s good π
I did have a good lunch, it was nice. Left over Chinese was what I had for lunch today. We eat a lot of stew, curries, various pasta dishes and soup in our family. We’re having pumpkin soup for dinner tonight π

June 13, 2018 at 12:38 am #74190Hello! I’m hoping to read at least a few pages of your WIP today π

June 13, 2018 at 12:53 am #74191I’m working on my WIP…
This is weird to ask but… does every scene necessarily need a goal/conflict/outcome or reaction/decision? Because the scene I’m working on does seem important (it introduces a side character, does some foreshadowing and drops some hints of important events that happen in the background) but it doesn’t seem to have that structure.
Yay looking forward to hear what you think! π
June 13, 2018 at 12:57 am #74192@seekjustice Mm, sounds good!Β I love Chinese food, but it gives me a stomachache, so…there’s always that balance when I have the chance to eat it. πΒ Oh, pasta is also a dish we eat a lot.Β Mostly when my dad isn’t home, though, since he thinks pasta is bland. πΒ My mom makes a good spicy lasagna, though, that he does enjoy.
You’ll never guess what I’m working on right now! π
@valtmy Ohh…I’m totally the wrong person to ask! πΒ That’s why I haven’t posted more of my Western yet, remember? πΒ Maybe SeekJustice will be able to answer you."Sylvester - Sylvester!"
June 13, 2018 at 12:59 am #74193You haven’t posted more of your western because of… scene structure?
June 13, 2018 at 1:10 am #74194Oooh, we’re having lasagna for dinner tomorrow night. Its my favourite dish π Pasta is pretty bland, but I like it with other things. π Rice is my favourite though.
I think every scene does need a conflict or a goal of some kind, or else its going to be boring, but the goal doesn’t need to be a major one. For example, the scene could be used to show some aspect of the character’s personality. You could do that by having her try to cook something (because my mind’s on food), and there be something in the way of her cooking dinner (that’s the conflict) and how she deals with the conflict shows an aspect of her personality (like her patience, or her irritability or something). Do you see what I’m saying? Like, you could introduce this side character by having the mc want to complete a goal of some kind and the side character helping or hindering in that goal, even though the goal can be something mundane and ordinary.
Does this even make sense?? That remains to be seen.

June 13, 2018 at 1:12 am #74195@valtmy Sort of. πΒ I’ve written enough that I could post it, but nothing exciting happens in any of the scenes I’ve written lately, since they’re just resolution scenes for the earlier excitements.Β I was planning to wait until I at least had something new that would be a little bit interesting before posting the next section.
I don’t want to bore you all with just “resolution” scenes and no action. π
"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
June 13, 2018 at 1:18 am #74196Yes I suppose that makes sense. Thanks! (now I’m imagining my character doing cooking and it, uh, doesn’t feel too right).
The scene is written from my side character’s POV and my MC is not even there at all (they haven’t met yet) so the purpose of the scene is foreshadowing to introduce a character and an element that my MC will interact with later on. But my side characterΒ does have a goal in the scene that ties in with the larger plot so I guess it’s fine. It just there isn’t a lot of dramatic conflict or decisions being made so I can’t tell whether it’s an action or reaction scene.
*sigh* Trying to write with a brain that’s stuck in editor mode is hard.
June 13, 2018 at 1:23 am #74197I wouldn’t worry about it too much at the moment, but if you’d like here’s a blog post I read yesterday about those kind of “quiet” scenes, if you’d find it useful: Click this link! (that doesn’t sound like a dodgy advertisementΒ at all)

June 13, 2018 at 1:23 am #74198I know the feeling. But, hey, at least you can afford to have a slower pace and lots of time for introspection given the genre you’re writing. π
Mine’s a comedy so I need things to be light, fast and with a constantly moving and changing web of jokes so that the humour doesn’t get old…Β π
June 13, 2018 at 1:37 am #74199Thanks! That was a nice article. I guess I can think of this scene as a… fireside chat scene. Without the fireside or the chat. π
