@seekjustice We were not there very long, but it was amazing to see each other!

June 6, 2018 at 12:39 am #73927@rochellaine Cool! I’ve never seen a production of Swan Lake, though I think it would be really pretty!
Well, I’ve been watching the tv show Victoria, and there’s this one dress Victoria wears regularly that really seems a bit….edgy for the Victorian period. I’ll see if I can find a picture of it…
I’m having trouble finding a picture of the exact dress, but its a bit like this one:
Only its lower and even less on her shoulders. That just seems really scandalous for the time period, especially for the queen, but the show looks fairly accurate in other ways (none of the other female characters wear dresses remotely like this one, they’re all very traditionally dressed). So, since the early Victorian period is not a particular interest of mine, I thought I’d ask your opinion. Are the directors just showing off their pretty actresses’ shoulders?

June 6, 2018 at 12:57 am #73928@seekjustice Oh, do you like ballet? I wouldn’t have thought so.
The Victorian era had very interesting standards of modesty. 😉 Showing your ankle was considered obscene and scandalous, and yet showing shoulders and even a bit of cleavage was common during certain events. I don’t think it would be appropriate for going out in the daytime, but ball gowns were always low-cut and I believe other dresses were as well. Specifically for Queen Victoria, here is a google document to which I added some pictures of her which seem to show that the tv people got it right. Because of the low-cut dresses I’m not going to add it here just to be sure not to cause a problem with the preferred modesty standards for this website.
Later, when Victoria was widowed, I believe she wore black, full coverage clothes for the rest of her life. I don’t know what she wore to parties and balls, though. I’ve mostly seen pictures of her in public appearances.
Anyway, yes that’s very low-cut, but I think it is correct for the time period.

June 6, 2018 at 1:03 am #73929Hmm…Interesting. Those last two pictures you had have dresses very similar to the ones that I was referring to. I just find it interesting because a lot of her other costumes are exceedingly modest, and then there’s just these random ones which are extremely revealing (like, I certainly wouldn’t be wearing them!). I suppose the show is currently covering her first year as queen and she’s eighteen years old, so the clothes of an eighteen year old are probably going to be completely different to the clothes we see in photographs of her as a middle-aged/older woman.
That’s pretty amazing!

Hey guys I’m on now. 🙂
Wow this is interesting. I’ve read Regency and Victorian era books before but never really thought about the fashion before.
June 6, 2018 at 1:19 am #73931Yeah, it’s really interesting! I’m not into fashion very much, so when I do research on historical periods or write historical fiction I tend to learn about as much of it as I can get by on and leave it at that, but obviously, that approach has its drawbacks 😀

June 6, 2018 at 1:22 am #73932@seekjustice Standards for modesty depended a lot on the time of day and the place or event. Ball gowns have always been less modest than everyday clothing. So has swimwear. Women didn’t swim with men during that period, but if you go forward fifty years to the 1890s-1900s, which I know more about, you see that walking dresses covered up to the neck and to the mid calves or ankles, depending on the year, afternoon dresses were sometimes sheer covering the neck, but still covered it, but evening gowns had very little coverage on the back or front, though the long trains swept the floor.
So when you see her wearing more or less coverage, take into consideration where she is and what she’s doing. That will have a lot of bearing on what she wears.
@valtmy Hello! As you can see, I am a kind of historical fashion nerd. 😛 What’s your favorite modern historical period?"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
June 6, 2018 at 1:26 am #73933Haha that’s how I do things as well. For my WIP, the setting is based of historical Korea but considering the tone of my story I guess I can get away with some inaccuracies. But this time I have done research and found pictures of the clothes (called hanboks) that my characters wear in the story.
Um… what do you mean by ‘modern historical’?
June 6, 2018 at 1:35 am #73934@valtmy I meant what is considered the modern period of history, from about the 1600s to the present. I don’t like ancient history much, and don’t know much about the middle ages so I was wondering what was your favorite period out of the section of history I study the most.
My favorite period is from about 1912-1970. 😀 But I have a few other periods I like especially as well.
@seekjustice You too. I think I may have asked you this before, but what’s your favorite period of modern history? French Revolution? 😉"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
June 6, 2018 at 1:36 am #73935@rochellaine (I don’t know why, but I just tagged myself)
My favourite costume she wears is her military one, it looks really pretty, but simple and formal and I’d love a dress like that :D. And her riding habit is really nice as well. But you probably know by now that I’m all for practical and ball gowns just don’t interest me (though in my more girly moments I do like to squeal over them with my sister).
I actually had to look up the other day what skin tones go with what colours, because I needed to know what colour dress Sapphire would wear.
I wrote a fantasy/historical set in Japan once, and it was actually quite fun finding out all about the different clothing, but probably only because it was different to what I’m used to.

June 6, 2018 at 1:42 am #73936I have a bunch of favourite periods. I like the Roman occupation of Britain, but that doesn’t count, and the early Middle Ages (1000-1200). But as for modern historical period, I find the French Revolution and the early colonial/exploration days of Australia interesting, but probably my favourite period will always be World War 1, and the events just before and after, so 1900-1920 ish. I’m also fascinated by the early modern Olympics as well, like the 1890 Olympics to about 1956.

June 6, 2018 at 1:46 am #73937Hmm… I’m not really sure what period is my favourite because I don’t really study history all that much… Maybe the Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s? Because that period has some of the monarchs I find the most fascinating like Frederick the Great, Maria Theresa and Catherine the Great.
I also like the Prohibition era in the US as well. Mostly because of the 1920s and 1930s style 😉
June 6, 2018 at 1:55 am #73938All my story ideas tend to be fantasy/historical pieces set in Asian cultures. My WIP is based on Korea, another project is on China and I have a story idea that is based on the nomadic sea tribes in Southeast Asia. I want to come up with one for Japan too since I am prolific watcher of anime but I guess I’ll have to see how it goes.
I just recently came back from a trip to Korea (for vacation + research). The hanboks are really stunning 🙂
June 6, 2018 at 1:55 am #73939@seekjustice What do you think of the pre-WWI Gibson Girl fashions? Ah, the Olympics are very interesting. And they were very different from what they are now!!
@valtmy There aren’t many monarchs that interest me greatly for some reason. I’m very fond of Lady Jane Grey and her cousin Edward, but other than that I usually prefer the people who rebel against the monarchs… 😛Please tell me you know that Prohibition era fashion isn’t what is portrayed in literature and movies/tv shows!! 😛 That is one of the most thoroughly and incorrectly stereotyped periods in fashion history.

June 6, 2018 at 2:06 am #73940@valtmy I love it 😀 I’ve had an idea for an Australian based fantasy for ages, because we have such an unique, but no one ever writes Australian fantasies. I haven’t got around to writing it yet though. I like the idea of the nomadic sea tribes one. That dress is so pretty….
@rochellaine *stares at pictures* Honestly. it looks ridiculous.Yeah, the Olympics were quite interesting back in the day. They’re very mainstream nowadays, but I have a whole book on the early Olympics which I love reading. I’ve always wanted to write a story based around one of them.
