@ariel-ashira I like amnesia. I’m not so fond of third degree burns. 😛 I was going to give Chara some, but I didn’t want her to get scarred, so I just gave her some painful, but not long-lasting second degree burns. 🙂 It was a selfish reason, though. Having her be scarred would be too much trouble to write about and I wanted her to heal quickly so she could do other stuff in the plot. 😀
How’s your story coming? I keep wanting to go and write Daughter of Judas but have to keep telling myself to finish my western first. 🙁

May 30, 2018 at 6:48 pm #73443@rochellaine I am coming along well, I guess. I am still in the researching, outlining part of several stories and I am not actually writing them yet. Part of why I cannot write them yet is because this crazy laptop we have to use right now doesn’t even have Word Documents!
How much do you know about amnesia? (It is a lot of fun. Shhh..don’t let our characters hear that.) As for the burns, my poor, poor character has third level burns on his hands as a result of being tortured. (Its killing me,too!)

May 30, 2018 at 6:54 pm #73444@ariel-ashira Ah, I had that problem about a month ago when I had to use a different computer from mine. 🙁 I ended up writing a little bit on a google doc and then giving up. 😛
Well, I know at least that the cliche thing that happens in half of the amnesia fiction stories where the person gets hit on the head again in the same place and it miraculously restores their memories can possibly happen in real life but is so rare that doctors consider it ridiculous to use it in your plot. 😉 I think the most common way is just by meeting people you knew and going places you’ve been to jog your memory.
The absolute best memory problem story in fiction has got to be in Hans Brinker, don’t you think? But I’ve read/seen a few others where it’s done well, too. I also like the ones where instead of a physical issue with the memory it’s the emotional trauma that has caused bad memories to be repressed. What do you think of that kind?

May 30, 2018 at 7:04 pm #73446@rochellaine Yeah, movies tend to use the rarest cures possible. 🙂 I have not read Hans Brinker. Now that you mentioned it, I will have to read it. 😀 My favorite amnesia story is The Black Stallion Revolts. And the way Alec gets his memory back is terrific! Its one of my favorite stories.
I had the tiniest bit of amnesia when I had my third and last concussion (it was a lot worse than the two I had before that.) I cannot remember events that happened a little bit prior to the concussion, or the concussion itself. I only know because my mom and sister remember it.

May 30, 2018 at 7:22 pm #73448@ariel-ashira Yes, you should definitely read Hans Brinker!!! It’s such an amazing book!!
I’ve only read the first Black Stallion book, so I don’t know to what you’re referring. 🙁 If you want to clarify I’m probably not ever going to read the rest of the series so I don’t mind spoilers. 😉
My grandmother had the same problem when she had a really bad staph infection. She only remembers a little bit about the hospital, and doesn’t remember a short while before that either.

May 30, 2018 at 7:26 pm #73449@rochellaine Do you not like the Black Stallion books?
"In a mask, was he?"
May 30, 2018 at 7:43 pm #73450@ariel-ashira I don’t dislike them, I just like other books better. I do remember I liked the first one when I read it, but that was probably eight or ten years ago and I can barely remember it now.
@seekjustice I’ve been listening to all the versions I can find of a song that reminds me very strongly of your Stars books and especially Justice."Sylvester - Sylvester!"
May 30, 2018 at 8:27 pm #73451@ariel-ashira i loved the Black Stallion years ago. My favourite horse book will always be War Horse though.
Ooh, ooh what song is it??

May 30, 2018 at 8:34 pm #73452@seekjustice “Lost in the Stars” by German-American composer Kurt Weill. He wrote a lot of operas and musicals in both German and English. “Lost in the Stars” is from a rather depressing musical also titled Lost in the Stars, and since the plot was depressing I haven’t listened to any more of the songs, but that song is beautiful…and also depressing. It’s about a man questioning his faith. It’s not a good song to end on, but it made me think of when Justice is grieving for the people he lost in the rebellion. There are hundreds of versions of it on YouTube so if you’re able to look it up and tell me what you think, please do!! It completely makes me think of your series and Justice. 😀
And actually, since you like that sort of thing, you might actually like the Lost in the Stars musical as well, huh? 😛

May 30, 2018 at 8:34 pm #73453Psychological amnesia is so much fun! I think that the Anastasia movie uses a physical injury–Anya falls off the train and hits her head. But the musical, I believe, uses a more psychological approach. She repressed her memories and tried to forget them.
A type of amnesia that’s quite common, but never mentioned in any books/movies that i know of is the inability to remember anything that happened after the accident. That sounds fun to play with as a writer.

May 30, 2018 at 8:54 pm #73455@seekjustice Have you ever heard of the movie 50 First Dates? I’ve never seen it but people have told me the plot several times and I just looked it up to make sure what it was. It looks to me like that has the type of amnesia you’re talking about. The girl was in a car accident so she can only remember one day and then forgets it the next day. I don’t know how good or clean it is, but I know it’s pretty famous.

May 30, 2018 at 9:01 pm #73456Oh actually my mum told me about that movie once, but she couldn’t remember what it was called. She thought I’d like it, but I haven’t seen it.
