@seekjustice I agree that the original versions of Robin Hood were pretty bad. That’s why I said I like the opera and movie versions. 🙂
Okay, if you want to argue against Richard, I’ll argue for him. I’ve just been reading his bio on Wikipedia, and only have seen one horrible thing he did, and that was the order of the persecution of the Jews. I cannot say anything good about that, except that soon afterward he realized it wasn’t a great idea, and tried to put a stop to it.
As far as good things go, I greatly admire the fact that he was protective of his sister, and took care of her and her rights after her husband died. I also was impressed with the fact that though John rebelled against him, he still forgave his brother and named him as heir instead of the nephew he had previously named as heir. From what I read of him, he neglected England for the Crusades, just because he needed to fight. He was a fighting man, which earned him the name The Lionhearted, and it was not in his nature to stay at home when there were wars which could be fought. Maybe his first duty was to his country, but no one is perfect. 😉 He also forgave the boy who shot him, and ended up killing him. When he was dying he let the boy go free.
So anyway, there are some of my arguments. Do you still think he was “all bad?” 😛

May 9, 2018 at 12:49 am #72206I return after having read through most of the Wikipedia article.
The man revolted against his own father (who granted wasn’t the greatest guy either), he abandoned England and taxed profusely in orer to pay for the crusades, including taxing the church (which no one was happy about). He, according to the article, was considered prone to an impressive list of vices and “above all excessive cruelty “.
Not that I’m claiming Wikipedia as my final source or anything 🙂 it has been wrong many times before.
Also, I see there being a difference between someone being a bad person and being a bad king. Richard definitely strikes me as a bad king, but whether he was a bad person I really don’t know.

May 9, 2018 at 1:17 am #72207@seekjustice A great many kids revolt against their own fathers during their growing up years. It is only with the sons of kings that it has such great consequences. 😛 (I am not in any way excusing rebellion against parents. I am simply stating the fact that Richard wasn’t a whole lot different from a normal person.)
One thing I have to say about his “excessive cruelty” is that the customs of the times were a little more generally cruel than they are now. So…I don’t know exactly what Wikipedia is referring to when it says “excessive” and I can’t argue about that, but it may have been only a bit worse than normal behavior for the time.
Other than that, I think my final argument will be that though sources contemporary to Richard state that he was disliked, only “a few decades after his death” he was spoken highly of and romanticized. This indicates to me that he at least wasn’t as bad as the kings who ruled after him, and that possibly he was both liked and disliked during his life, as all kings are, but it was mostly the people who didn’t like him that recorded their thoughts.
(Don’t worry. I’m getting all my info from Wikipedia too. 😛 )
As for being a bad king, but possibly a good person, in the 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood, Robin criticizes the king sharply for having “deserted England” to fight in the Crusades. So that isn’t completely ignored. 😉

May 9, 2018 at 1:28 am #72208I think there is somewhat of a difference between teemaged rebellion and…you know a historical event called The Great Revolt. Like swords and murder. Just saying.
He did, however, knight his cook and that made me laugh. So there’s that 😛
And I’m Australian, we have an inbuilt suspicion of authority. Especially authority that does not even speak the same language as the people they rule 😀
I don’t even know why we’re arguing about this though, since you were contemplating making him bad anyway.

May 9, 2018 at 1:43 am #72209@seekjustice Yes, totally. I was just trying to think of any possible arguments for the side I chose. If I was arguing against Richard, I’d think up really good arguments for that side instead. 😛
Haha! I’m only “contemplating” the story at all! I doubt it’ll ever get written. I’ve planned the premises for probably two hundred stories and will think of hundreds more which will never be written.
Oh my goodness, I just watched the Studio C Phantom of the Opera sketch, and it was so funny! Do you watch Studio C?

May 9, 2018 at 1:50 am #72210We just enjoying debating for the sake of it 😛
No, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of their videos.

May 9, 2018 at 2:01 am #72211@seekjustice Yup! 😀
They’re a Mormon comedy group based out of BYU, so most of their sketches are clean. I really hate that they include magic, Harry Potter, and stuff like that in some of their sketches, but for the most part they’ve got good, family comedy.
Here’s the sketch I was talking about.
And here’s another sketch, just in case you’d like to try it out. 😉

How’s Chara doing?

May 9, 2018 at 2:10 am #72213@seekjustice Do that, and let me know what you think. 🙂 I was actually introduced to Studio C through KP myself, so I guess I’m passing it on. 😛
Chara’s doing okay, but I’ve been getting distracted looking up a certain Richard of England…
I’m going to do a bit more writing and then sign off too. Are your arms feeling any better?
"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
May 9, 2018 at 2:19 am #72214Okay 🙂
Well, I’ll disappear and then you can go back to Chara or to bed, you know, because its past two for you!
Not really but hopefully they’ll be mostly better soon.

May 9, 2018 at 2:23 am #72215@seekjustice Hm. Yes, I should go to bed. 😀
Okay, see you tomorrow hopefully! And I’ll keep praying for your arms.
Goodnight.

May 9, 2018 at 8:48 am #72216@rochellaine @jenwriter17 Yeah, it is sad. And its not fair. Dont worry though, this forum could become a ghost town and I would still stick around like a burr on a donkey.
Cool conversations you guys have. Its entertaining reading them. Although I wish I could join them more often, but my Mom or sister is usualy on in the evenings. I am usualy on in the mornings.

@seekjustice Oh, okay. 🙂 Haha, nope. Don’t follow that advice. You might end up dying, don’t you think?"Sylvester - Sylvester!"
May 9, 2018 at 10:49 am #72221@rochellaine I am here for a few seconds, anyway. 😛
