@hope I use Hostgator. They were a little more expensive than some others (by a dollar or two a year) but I paid for 3 years upfront, as well as paying for my domain name, and it was around $60.
A fair word of warning…setting up a WordPress.org site is a ton of work. The only reason I did it is that my folks wanted me to take a class and learn how so that I could work on our business site. (I would have used blogger had they not wanted me to do WordPress). Even with the online videos and lectures and such, I shed a good many tears of frustration while building the site. You’ve been warned! 🙂
February 4, 2016 at 11:36 am #8996It can be a bit of trouble sometimes, but if you use the forum, you’ll find most of your problems have an easy fix. Like I said too, whatever you go through, there’s probably a 75% chance I faced it too, so just let me know if you have any problems. Personally, I really like WordPress.

February 4, 2016 at 12:59 pm #9003Yes, but there are also a few places I could buy a domain name without signing up for a hosting site.

February 4, 2016 at 1:11 pm #9004hmm, I’m not sure about that. Try googling it.

February 4, 2016 at 2:11 pm #9006@hope yes you can buy a domain name before setting up your web hosting site. Or buy a domain separately from the site that will be hosting your website. Generally, the hosting sites have ‘package deals’ when you buy a domain and so many years of service.
WordPress is amazingly versatile, and yes, there is a lot of information available on the web if you have trouble.
February 4, 2016 at 5:01 pm #9008Don’t you already have a domain name @hope?
February 4, 2016 at 5:09 pm #9010@anna-brie I do, but I have it through google and for some reason they only let you renew your name for ten years. Anyhow, my year expires in May so I plan to just buy a new one.
Also, as to wordpress, for the moment I’ve decided to just use WordPress.com. I have limited memory, but I think I’ll be able to do everything else I want (I think). Anyway, if or when I want to upgrade to wordpress.org, I’ll be able to move all my content from .com to .org. But the price for a website is a bit more than it is worth to me right now, since I just use it for blogging. (I don’t know what sort of deal you got, Daeus, but most places cost $25-$40 per year to host a site. And that’s normally a sale price, so it might go up to twice as much after the first few years.

February 4, 2016 at 5:50 pm #9014@hope If you can switch over when it makes more sense, that sounds fine. Before you do that though, hop over to the WordPress.org forum and ask these three questions:
Can I switch everything over to WordPress.org when I want to without losing anything?
Will I be able to put an email sign up form on my wordpress.com website?
Can I create a landing page on wordpress.com (very important for getting subscribers)?

February 4, 2016 at 6:10 pm #9016What is a landing page?
INTJ - Inhumane. No-feelings. Terrible. Judgment and doom on everyone.
February 4, 2016 at 6:33 pm #9019It is a page you create that has one only one thing for viewers to do – generally sign up for an email list. It won’t look like the rest of your website. You specially design it to focus everything on what you are offering (free book) and what you want (email address). There are no links for people to click unless you purposely place them there. That way they can’t get distracted. If the choice is between giving you their email and being distracted, most people will choose being distracted. You have to give them only one option. Nick Stephenson talks about this in his books.

February 5, 2016 at 8:34 am #9026Ah yes, I want a landing page, which is part of the reason I switched to WordPress. I’m not sure if I can create one yet or not; I’ll have to experiment. But I do know I can switch everything over to .org if/when I want to (I’ll lose the menu and will have to redo the format, but the information will come over). And, from what I’ve seen there are widgets for e-mail sign-up and even one that connects with mail-chimp.
