@nova21 Gag! Yes! Thank you! Oh, he. was. horrid. I felt like Rhett the entire book–eyebrows raised, smile sardonic, lowly muttering, “Really? That’s who you want to commit adultery with?” Sorry, but I just…I just can’t. Leslie Howard’s portrayal of him in the movie made him even worse. Ugh. Just ugh.
You want to talk villains, talk Ashley Wilkes.
Ah, yes. The few moments of Scarlett’s softening. And the dress! I have a Hallmark ornament of her spinning about in the curtain dress and Rhett saying, “You’ve got more charm than the law allows.” Priceless! I do so love the few moments Scarlett and Rhett had of peace and prosperity, before he left and Bonnie died and she lost the baby. 😭😭😭 And when Mammy had on her taffeta petticoats–LOL! So many good parts. And, yet, far more sad.
Definitely try kickin’ ’em out sometime. Hopefully yours are much more subordinate than mine! 😉
September 20, 2020 at 12:30 pm #85025*slides in late to the welcoming party, tea in hand* Hello and welcome Ella! Welcome to the lovely Kingdom of Pen! Do make yourself at home.
To answer your questions:
– Once I tried to write a mystery and it went horribly (well, actually, it was alright–I just never finished it), so I mostly stick to fantasy. Props to anyone who can write in the said suspenseful genre.
– My WIP is a fantasy political drama called The Drakesbanes, which I summarized the other day as follows: After the royal family gets assassinated, a would-be puppetmaster, a missing prince, a terrified new queen, and an indentured servant with two months missing from his memory all have a year to save Rumir from being annexed by their powerful neighbors.
– I was a KP wraith (which means I loved the site but never actually joined the forum) for several years before the hiatus, and now I’m one of the interns here, which is neat.
Now I’ll raise you a few questions of my own: Who is your favorite character you’ve ever created? (A difficult question I know.) How long have you been playing basketball? (That’s so neat btw–I admire athletes so much)
“Seven seconds till the end. Time enough for you. Perhaps. But what will you do with it?”
September 20, 2020 at 2:59 pm #85033Hey!! 👋
Your book sounds really interesting!! Will you be posting anything on KP? I have always liked the idea of beta reading, but I don’t want to bother people with someone who has had little to no experience! 😜
Question 1: My favorite character was named Will in a book I wrote when I was eleven. 🤣 But he was just so amazing, because he… just was. 😉 He was kind of the cliché “dark and brooding” (😂) but he changed into my MC’s hero at the end (if you’ve read Divergent, he’s kinda like Tobias–sort of).
Question 2: I’ve been playing basketball for a year, but I practice every day and I’m doing strength training with my team for my school. It’s been great!! 😃
Thank you all for the kind welcome!! 😊😊

@nova21 Dark and brooding? 😍 Can I read it??? 😆 I have a serious weakness for dark and brooding guys. And grumpy guys. And rakish guys. And old guys (I’m serious, like late thirties, early forties…like Rhett Butler). And…yeah, the kind of guys that I wouldn’t marry. 😉
Oh, and I have no experience beta reading, but I had a girl let me beta read her book recently, and she hasn’t cussed me out for doing a crappy job yet, so I guess that means I’m not half bad. 😆 The way I see it, if you write and/or read a lot, then you’re qualified. I’ll be needing betas in about a…year. Yeah, I was going to put your name down, but that’s too far away. (Why? Why does this have to be such a long process? 😭)
And you are welcome for the welcome! 😊

Ha, that’s great! 😝 You wouldn’t want to read it though, trust me.
When you’re ready, I’d love to read it!!

@nova21 😁 I understand. I don’t even want to read some of my old work, let alone subject anyone else to the horror. Maybe, you know, Will could make a comeback in a future book or something. I’ve done that before, and it’s working.
I will definitely keep you in mind, although I have no idea how long it’ll take me to finish my WIP, then finish this next one. (My current work-in-progress is the third in a series, so I–unfortunately–won’t have any betas, but the next next novel will.) I’ll keep you posted, and thanks!
September 21, 2020 at 10:54 am #85042@nova21 Ehehe thanks! It’s my beloved child, so I appreciate the kind words 😀 I have a feeling I will probably post some of it on KP(?) I have a few bits and pieces on my blog already, so we’ll see. I’ll definitely need some betas in the future–I’ve already conscripted my dear husband into being an alpha reader XD
Oooh, I love the sound of Will! Dark and brooding never gets old, honestly. It’s so fun to write, cliché though it may be.
That’s so cool about your basketball team!! I would ask a more specific question about it, but alas, sports remain somewhat of a mystery to me. What made you decide to start playing?

Cool beans! 😜

Mmhmm!
Well, my brother was the jump-start to my playing, probably because of how much he improved over the summer. I was like, hey, I could do that too! I’m definitely not at his level, but I’m loving it. 😊

-gladiator, 2000September 21, 2020 at 11:50 pm #85133@nova21 Hey, ya! Morning, and all that. Welcome to the K and the P, but together of course. I’ve made my timely entrance out of the void.
I’ll answer your questions to the point:
Nombure Ûnon: Fantasy. Mystery. and POETRY. And Prose. And generally something along those lines, to be surely exact.
Nembuor Ûnun: I can’t fill you in on all the particulars of all my…”works in progress”, or what have ya. But I can inform you that I’m working on upwards of sixty mystery novels (11 in actuality at the moment), a whole heap of fantasy, and a second poetry anthology. Actually, I just began a new language of fairly large import just today (in fantasy). Something which needed to be done in a while in fact. I’m also just starting to learn French, so that added some interesting inspiration.
The main projects in mystery are what I’m calling Epitaph, The Murder of Samuel Richards, Mathematical Murder, and another called Justice Takes its Toll (the title of which, I came up with a long time ago, and have yet to change). That is, those which I am working on at the moment. The main projects in fantasy are these: The Lay of the West (a 300 page epic poem set within mine fantasy world), another epic fantasy poem of the same proportions (which I’ll be drafting hopefully in November), an epic fantasy novel of a scheduled course to finish in at 1,777 pages which is a bit unrealistic, I know. The titles for these last two are already made, but I’m withholding them from people at the moment because I think they have much potential to be ending titles. Although I do have ideas for two science-type fiction novels, I’ve set those aside for the moment. The first one is a story I came up with erewhile which I have so entitled Subject 13. This, having to do with aliens (original, I know), is naturally not very high on my list of probable future projects. I’ve never written of aliens, and I don’t think my writing style would bend enough for that novel. But I have it there all the same. The second is Piece of Time. Accordingly, it is a time-travel/fantasy-type novel, which methinks could end up being published, though I don’t suppose that would take place anytime soon.
If you haven’t guessed already, I write poetry. I’ve self-published my first anthology entitled A String of Words, and the second — As the Days Fly By — is on its way.
Well, those are my works in progresses…sorry, you asked. XD!
Anyways, I’ve been on Kingdom Pen for a while. As the other folk of The Team have already mentioned note of for interesting value that they are KP interns, I’ll add me name in there, too; that is, I’m a KP intern, too.
Your character “Will” reminds me of somebody. In fact, I know that person quite well, to be exact.
@gracie-j XD How surprising! Gone With the Wind enters scene, stage right! I had no idea you enjoyed it so much. (NOT)

@leon-fleming Art thou mocking me, thy lordship? Surely thou knowest that mine adoration for Captain Butler knoweth no bounds. Where hast thou been all this time, anyway? I had come to believe that the rumors of thy death were indeed true. Wait! What is this? Thou hast not heard these ghastly tales? Oh, aye, they whisper them in the alleyways and at the street corners, they do, voices pitched low into murmurs and words nigh inaudible. But they met mine ears either way. They say that thee wert found with a knife in the chest in thy bedchamber a sennight past.
I am not quite sure what to think now that I know thou yet live.

Whoa. That’s a lot of WIPs. 😆 Are you working on most of these at the same time?? I have to stick with one at a time, otherwise the characters and plotlines kinda mix together.
So you self-publish? How has that worked out for you? I don’t know if I would ever publish anything, but it’s always helpful to hear what other people have tried. 😉
@gracie-j
That took me like 5 minutes to figure out what you said! 😝

@nova21 I took five minutes to make sure I’d used each word right, so I feel ya! 😋
Girl, you should totally work toward publication! I mean, you know, you do what you want… I’m published through KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), and since Lord knows when @leon-fleming will reply, I’ll let you know that he’s through KDP too, although he won’t gush about self-pubbing like I will. 😉 Self-publishing is all DIY, which means marketing is on your own and out-of-pocket, of course, and so are other things (like a cover, for example). Most outlets are free (like KDP), and you get pretty good royalties, the ability to purchase then resell discounted copies, and–on KDP–eBook and paperback options, as well as ALL the rights to every single work you publish. No deadlines. No contracts. It’s so freeing. Freeing and time-consuming, since you have to do all your own marketing (which is great if you have multiple social media outlets, which I don’t) and stuff, but the actually pubbing process is fairly simple and quick.
Then you have indie publishing. The only different between self and indie, really, is that independent publishing is usually through a very, very, very small company. And I say usually because that’s not always true. They’ll do your cover and basic marketing (I think) and distribution to bookstores, etc., but they don’t have the same rules as tradition publishing. But I’m not an expect on indie, since I’ve only research indie and trad.
Traditional publishing requires, usually, an agent, a contract, and a lot of work. But there are many pubbing companies who will accepted unsolicited manuscripts, meaning you don’t need an editor.
I’ve probably TMIed you, haven’t I? I’m SO good like that! 😆 But, seriously, if you have any questions about publishing, feel free to ask!

How does one work on 60 mystery novels? I mean yes, only 11 in actuality, but you still have at least some plan for each of the 60 mystery novels.
Do you cycle through each of your WIPs like, fantasy on Monday, Mystery on Tuesday, sci-fi on Wednesday, and so on? Or do you work on each a little each day? Or do you write one as long as you can on one project until you hit a roadblock, and move to a different WIP?
@gracie-j
I’m a bit confused. Is, or is not Leon Fleming dead? I thought these whispers around the forum were merely rumors, but if they are indeed in fact true… that would be an issue. We can’t have a dead man as our poetry editor, you know.

I am sorely afraid, my dear Lady Kathleen, that thou must confirm these things with the man himself. Presuming that he is in fact alive, of course. As I am not the coroner, I cannot divulge any details, should I possess any, which I do not. Seeing as how he has somehow managed to mock me of my adoration for Gone with the Wind, I would assume that he has either risen from the dead or faked his demise. Since he is as cunning a fox as any, I would be quick to believe the latter.
