I have seen articles all over Kingdom Pen about how to improve character arcs, but I’m not totally sure what a character arc is! Can someone please explain it?
Thanks! 😉

You can pronounce it however you want.
December 20, 2017 at 10:56 pm #57308@dekreel It’s your character changing over the course of your story. It’s them learning things, deciding things, being shown things about the world and changing on a deep level because of those things.
Usually, a character arc tracks the curve of how a character becomes a better wiser person over the story, but downward characters arcs can also trace a negative change.
Character arcs are important because they’re what your characters traces to grow as a person, and they usually happen gradually and with a lot of struggle and difficulty. Only out of that does your character “arc” into a newer version of themselves

December 20, 2017 at 11:08 pm #57310@dekreel @sam-kowal got it in a nutshell. Basically, if your character starts the book bitter and angry, goes through the plot and comes out having forgiven and learnt to love (or vice versa) that is a character arc. Its just how your character changes through the story.

January 2, 2018 at 9:45 pm #58765@dekreel Well, I was gonna say about the same thing as @introvert_girl. K. M. Weiland’s books are AMAZING; Outlining Your Novel, Structuring Your Novel, and Creating Character Arc (they all have workbooks too, which I’m currently using)
