        Hello everyone,

After some back-and-forthing, we have decided that Animal Farm will be the first book of our study. *Three cheers and confetti!*

Now I do have to make a confession. Animal Farm was actually the second most popular with The witch of blackbird pond leading by a slight majority. While I think The witch of blackbird pond was a good suggestion, we have decided to go with Animal Farm For basically one reason

What that is is the historical setting. While I think this would be an interesting time to study, I’m worried we could really get carried away with historical discussion especially with all the nuances of puritanism and all the views regarding it and the controversy. This could be a good discussion, but because our main focus is the study of writing style and since time is an important consideration for all of us, I don’t think this is the place for that type of discussion. Therefore, we have gone with the second most popular Animal Farm.

I’m sorry to overrule in this instance. I’ll try to always pick the most popular book, but I just wanted to be considerate of people’s time.

So scamper off everybody and go get your copy. I’ll be back latter with links to any free ebooks or audiobooks if I can find them.

@Daeus Yeah, that’s fine. I get why you did that. We probably would end up discussing the historical setting more than the quality of writing in the book, etc. 🙂

Well, @daeus , personally I’m rather disappointed because I expected that we would be reading “The Witch of Blackbird Pond,” and had already set my heart on it. I find myself that discussions on any aspect of a book are instructive in the art of writing, but since you acted in the interest of time, I can hardly blame you.

I also wasn’t too keen on reading “Animal Farm” by Orwell, because my sister read one of his books and despised both it and the author. (She rarely condemns any book, so when she does I sit up and take notice:) Of course, this book of his may prove to be very different …

I’m not sure if I’ll read it or not. Maybe some of you have read it and can tell me a bit about its content?

@overcomer it’s a political allegory— I absolutely loved it. Basically about a farm of animals who decide they’ve had enough with farmers and are going to set up their own democracy and live life fairly and equally… which devolves into utter chaos as the rules keep changing, and in the end… well… I won’t spoil it. It wasn’t a warm fuzzies book— but it’s incredibly well written and very thought provoking.

There is no objectionable content whatsoever.

@overcomer I read Animal Farm earlier this year for a school assignment. I don’t know which book of his your sister read, but personally I thought Animal Farm was AMAZING. It’s based on the the self-destructive nature of a totalitarian//communist government, but even if you aren’t a huge fan a political history//strategy it’s still great just to read as a fantasy. If you don’t know the plot, it’s about a group of farm animals who rebel and overthrow the farmer in order to become self governing. They set up laws and a government and the book is about their attempt at self-governing.

Thanks, @kate-flournoy 🙂 It sounds a little like “Whittington.” I’ll probably like it then. *puts on game face* In the words of Linguini, “Let’s do this thing!”

Thank you too, @adry_grace 🙂 Political history sounds great, although I think the chances of getting caught up in off-branching discussions on this book may be nearly as great as with “The Witch of Blackbird Pond.” I suppose most every book has aspects that make for interesting discussions if they are well-written and thought-provoking.

You can get a free audio version of the book here: https://archive.org/details/GeorgeOrwellsanimalFarmRadioAudio

You can get the ebook for 99c and should definitely be able to get the paper version from most libraries.

@overcomer I’m so sorry about smashing your hopes. It’s my intention to do that as little as possible, but time is a big consideration. I’m not incredibly surprised that your sister disliked one of the author’s other books. I’ve never read any of his other books, but I know a little bit about him. People often mistake the purpose of Animal Farm and think it is a book against communism. In fact, the author was himself a socialist. He was an idealist socialist though and it really angered him that his bright dreams of a communist world never turned into a reality. He wrote the book to condemn what he thought was the abuse of communism. He didn’t quite do the best job though and the book’s legacy has been one of the absolute evils of communism in general.

@dbhgodreigns and @everybody We can start as soon as everybody has their book. What do you all think? Is a week too short for everybody to get a copy? I think two weeks is the most we can wait.

@daeus I won’t be able to do it this time as my Mum says Animal Farm is not for me quite yet. *one day…* Anyway I hope the first of many club talk/discussion goes well for you all who are doing it.

@bluejay Oh, I’m sorry about that. Thankfully it’s a short one. Only ten chapters, so it will only take us about five weeks.

Well, looks like Animal Farm has been decided, but here were my votes (for future reference):

                                  1. To Kill a Mockingbird
                                  2. The Witch of Blackbird Pond
                                  3. Black Beauty
