Y’all, I need help. I have multiple WIP’s, and the main character of my American Civil War Novel is the Great-Grandfather of one of my WWII MC’s.

But…the Civil War character, my plan is for him to fall in love with a former Slave woman that loves him as well and they get married. I love the plan, and I love their romance together and their love for each other, but that…would mean changing something up for my WWII MC.

Due to Historical Accuracy, the US would then classify Ezra (the WWII MC) as black, due to the “One Drop law” that was prominent in the Southern US at that time. But that would then make him “segregated” from the rest of the Air Force, and probably change a few things up, including his plane crew.

I’m honestly notย entirelyย opposed to the Idea, but also, I’m kinda scared to change his story up so much. DX I feel like it would add more complexity to him and his story, but also, that might mean dropping a few characters I love.

So, my question is thus: Should I go for it and change up Ezra’s story and keep the romance? Or drop the love and let my Civil War MC marry someone else that will never have a name and honestly never be important to either story? (sounds a little callous, I know, but I can’t imagine another woman marrying him other than the one I mentioned above XD)

I don’t know of anyone to tag…maybe @gracie-j? No matter what, if you have any answers, don’t hesitate to reply! ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks Y’all. <3

This might have been better in the Plot Forum. Sorry Y’all, I’m so new to this. XDย Ugh, technology.

(Whoa. I have not been on here in forever. This is insane.)

Hullo, @freedomwriter76! I don’t know you from Adam’s housecat…but I would be glad to lend a wee bit of aid!

Personally, I like the romance idea, and I vote to keep it. To keep Ezra’s story from changing so much, you could (1) make those characters you love black (or at least a percentage black) to include them in his crew, (2) make one of those characters his commanding officer (whites were often put in command of blacks during WWII), or (3) make his African-American heritage unknown. The One Drop Rule only applies when one’s ancestry is known and/or visible.

OR, you could make the slave woman a different ethnicity. For example, she could be Native American, and Native Americans were not segregated during WWII. Or she could be mulatto and be extremely light, to the point where her African heritage was unknown or intentionally hidden. Or she could be a white slave, as white slaves were very prominent in America due to the influx of them during the early colonial days.

I hope that helps! Whatever you decide to do, I’d keep the love story! But if you feel it would change things too much, then don’t worry about it – maybe keep it as canon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@gracie-j, thank you so much! (I’m new to the forums, but I’ve been on Kingdom Pen for a while. I just now got an account. XD And hey, another Southerner! XD)

All of your ideas are really making me think! ๐Ÿ˜€ I talked to a writer friend about it, and she loves the idea as well. She said for one that she doesn’t think she’s EVER read a WWII book with a MC that’s black or biracial, and plus, she made the point that it allows me to explore with a whole lot of conflict! And every writer loves conflict, right!? XD

I’m still planning on the slave woman being black, but I do like the idea of one of those characters I love being his commanding officer. Hmm…now I’m getting ideas! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It most certainly helps! I honestly don’t think I could let go of the romance anyways. These two are in love, and I’m not going to take that away from them! That would be horrid of me! XD

Thank you once again Grace! I hope you have a wonderful day! (and, if I’m not mistaken, you wrote a review on Jayna Baas’ย Preacher on the Runย novel, correct? I think I saw the portion of it that she has on her website, and I was kinda curious. ;D)

              You’re so welcome! (YES!)

Fantastic! I can’t think of any either…mainly because most WWII are focused on the Jews and Nazis, I guess. So, yes, I think it’s a fabulous idea, and YES!! You can never have too much conflict, if you ask me! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gotcha! Glad you like that! ๐Ÿ˜€

IT WOULD!!! Please, don’t break my – er,ย their hearts! XD

You are so welcome! It was my pleasure! I hope you do too! (I did, yes!! Small world! XD)

@gracie-j Yes, most are. One of my other WIP is about the Nazi’s and the Jews and the Holocaust, but WWII is so much more vast than that! I’m glad you like the idea. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I promise I won’t break your heart. XD XD XD

(I thought you did! XD It’s my favorite Novel and Jayna’s always so willing to answer my writing questions. You’re a published writer as well. Any chance I can hear more about your books? I’m pretty curious. :D)

@gracie-j. Also, does anyone else hate the way most Fiction portrays the South during the Civil War? *raises hand* That’s why my Southern MC from my Civil War novel is so different than most portrayals. ๐Ÿ˜‰

                    It certainly is! ๐Ÿ˜€

                    Thank you. *sighs*

(Awesome! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ๐Ÿ˜€ Absolutely!!! I write Christian pirate romances (very niche XD), and my first book is basically a pirate Rapunzel retelling (which was not what I’d intended to write, but it kinda came out like that XD) about a female pirate captain who discovers her true heritage as the daughter of a duke! I can send you an e-copy if you’re interested in reading it!)

AND YES! I just can’t stand it either. *groans* I’m glad you’re making yours different!!

                      @gracie-j. You’re Welcome. XD

I will absolutely take a copy if you’re willing to share! I just got a WWII Christian Romance novel centered around D-Day from the library, and your books sound very interesting! I’d love to read it if you’re actually willing to share! ๐Ÿ˜€

I know, right!? Being a Southerner, it makes me so annoyed! :I Ah yes, he’s a Southern Pastor that fights againstย slavery, and I love him so much. ๐Ÿ˜‰
