Nyx sniffed at the âfoodâ offered to him, nearly gagging as he did so. GahâŚthis was nothing like the jelly-filled tarts and fresh empanadas back homeâŚ
Then againâŚNyx doubted heâd be eating any of those things again anytime soonâŚ
He took a few bites, but only enough to please the goat-boy that had seemed to label himself as Nyxâs unwanted caretaker.
The last thing Nyx wanted, or would allow, was to be force fed like some baby.
Heâd rather die.
He watched as goat boy pranced around, studying his environment, looking just as concerned and out of place as Nyx felt.
Nyx raised a brow as the boy continued to move and prance about in such an odd manner that it reminded him of the dancers back homeâŚ
Reminded him of Lynâs dancingâŚ
âYou look like youâre dancing,â Nyx said.
Any other time, the boy wouldnât have been able to hear him. Nyx sneered, hissing at himself for forgetting that, as of right now, his mental guards were down. The boy had probably heard him.
He huffed, finished with the food, or slop, or whatever it was, though it didnât fill him up at all. He curled up a bit, keeping an eye still on Gus.
The boy returned to the fire, and, without warning, let out a bleat-like cry.
Nyxâs ears twitched and he rubbed his head into the dirt, paw covering one ear.
The cry wasnât all that loud, but Nyx was already agitated. He was damp, hungry, in the hands of a stranger who insisted on treating him like some sort of fragile little doll, andâŚ
Lyn was nowhere to be seenâŚ
âDo you mind!?â He snapped, laying back down in a ball, his three tails wrapping around him.

#ProtectSebSeptember 7, 2023 at 11:24 am #155728Lol, Iâm really enjoying Nyx and Gusâ interactions. Iâm also loving the fact that Gus thinks Nyx is like a baby or whatever and Nyx is like super annoyed by that XD thatâs one of his pet peeves, legit (being treated like a baby)
except by LynâŚsometimes

Okay cool.
Yeah đ He knows he canât figure out Nyxâ age, but just from the way he acts, Gus will assume he is inexperienced, and therefore uses that nickname. Honestly he calls any recruit of any age a babe, if they act immature đ So thereâs the explanation.
And Nyx is gonna have to get used to it, unless he can prove his toughness đ

Gus froze, wobbling on one leg.
He swiveled his head at the voice, like a frightened deer, ears pricked up. âWhat dâyou mean?â
Nyxâs eyes were mere slits, as he curled up tighter. âWhat youâre doing!! Itâs⌠annoying.â
That didnât make any sense whatsoever.
Gus stumbled back to two hooves, came closer, and mewled again, a little quieter.
The fox once again hissed.
âWhat do you mean?â Gus asked again. âItâs sâposed to be enchanting.â
It was. It was more than that – it was a normal part of life. You saw it in the barracks all the time, when the soldiers began to realize they would never see their mothers again, and wanted to comfort themselves. It wasnât just dancing. It was the soul of a wild animal, ripping itself free for a few bright moments, before crouching back down to snuffle in the straw.
âWhat?â
âHavenât you ever felt a bit of a frenzy coming on, like, at sunset or something?â
âUh, no. Itâs weird. And Iâm trying to rest, thank you very much.â Nyx set his chin on one of his tails, and began to breathe slowly.
Gus hugged himself, and began to amble away along the beach.
âWhat are you doing?â Nyx demanded from behind.
âFinding the stream.â Gusâ voice rose. âIâm thirsty – and I can smell it from here. You can come if you like.â

September 14, 2023 at 12:03 pm #156371Evander
Crouching as he moved, Evander slowly took a few steps forward, looking thoroughly around for movements beyond his own.
He looked towards the ocean for a brief second, then blinked at the sky, and took several more steps forward.
He used his sharp sense of hearingâwhich he rarely used for anything except huntingâto listen for any possible sound sign life. A small bug jumped nearby, and scared the large tiger.
Recovering from the scare, Evander crept along until he came to a stream.
“Oh… this is nice.” he dipped one of his orange and black paws into water.

September 14, 2023 at 12:03 pm #156372September 14, 2023 at 4:34 pm #156399@grcr you mind if Skyraptor meets your charrie? if you don’t want to just say he didn’t notice her.
Skyraptor
Faint thoughts led her down the river. Surely there was life here besides her.
Sentient minds, be they animal, human, or alien, were different than those of mere beasts…. This thought she was tracing was that of a being who could talk and feel and think just as well as she or her master could.
She came out of the brush to see a tiger, the large orange and black cat drinking from the stream.
He looked up. Would he notice her?

September 14, 2023 at 4:37 pm #156406(Gus won’t see Skyraptor yet)
Gus
The little fox did not follow. Instead, faint snores made their way to Gusâ ears.
Gus nodded, satisfied, and tripping his way down the edge of the water a ways, until he came to a soggy bank, covered in a thin layer of silt.
It trickled down a small but rocky slope, the source somewhere in the wood.
Gus hesitated, then walked along the water until he was no longer on sand.
He climbed the rocks up towards the line of trees, like a tiny mountain goat, his hoofs clicking neatly, like a bag of marbles bouncing on someoneâs hip.
At the top, he grasped at the wispy grass, pulling himself far enough to land, flat on his stomach, in the undergrowth. To his right, lay the stream beside him.
He took in a deep breath of sweet heather, as they tickled his face.
Then froze.
Ahead, a large, dark-colored form dipped a paw into the stream.
Gusâ eyes turned glassy, and his fur shivered along his spine.
He had no idea what the creature was. It looked similar to a mountain lion, but much, much bigger, and bleeding with fire and night.
All he knew, from the sudden fluttering of his heart, was that this creature was a predator.
His animal side was afraid. But his boy side suddenly saw a dream of himself, riding a great beastâs back across the plains, sending a war whoop into the blindingly white clouds.
The creature shifted on its silky haunches as it drank, seemingly quite comfortable.
Gus began to back away on all fours, gently and lightlyâŚ
And stuck his little palm into a sharp pink thistle.
Before he meant to, he let out a cry of pain – and scrambled, half crawling, half running, into a tall clump of grass.
Inside, he sucked on his hand, and sniffed the air for signs of danger.

September 14, 2023 at 4:44 pm #156409@whalekeeper Ok! But she’ll definitely notice him. She’s small enough to fit on a man’s shoulder, so she shouldn’t frighten him if she comes over, right?
Skyraptor
A small hoofed creature (didn’t catch what Gus was, sorry) came to the stream also.
The sense of fear blasted into Skyraptor’s head like wind. He was afraid, and for good reason. The tiger could easily eat him.
He staggered back and yelped as he stepped on something sharp–a thorn maybe, or a rock? His thoughts suddenly sharpened in her mind in response. Not so that she could hear the exact words, but they were louder than the other animal’s.
Skyraptor gasped and ran closer. “Are you okay? What did you step on?” she asked.

âAre you okay? What did you step on?â
Gus bit down on his hand accidentally, and tried to blink away the sudden tears. They tricked down his chin as he looked down.
The speaker was a strange lizard in the grass beside him.
Gus smiled politely through the tears, and mumbled under his breath. âQuiet, little âun. Thereâs some sorta lion nearby.â
