I don’t know if you saw it or not, but I am back! I will try to get to reading and critiquing part three of The Color of Hope tommorow!

August 5, 2025 at 12:38 pm #204963I have finished The Color of Hope and quite enjoyed it. I’ve been quite busy with work lately, and am going on vacation right away. I will get to answering your feedback questions when I get back!

I know some of us were discussing this during the book, but I like the idea of showing Sara and Cole’s closer relationship in the beginning of the book. I’m going to look and see if I can insert this into the early chapters.
I see what you mean about Alec being a pretty stagnant character during the book. I’m hoping to be able to expand more on his character and make him less passive during the second book, as it’s not until he finds out about Sara’s faith that he really starts to take action. I am struggling to find ways he can benefit the plot of the second book beyond the first half or so of the story.
When you say that you were expecting him to take more action during the climax of the book, do you mean that it feels incomplete as is? What sort of involvement were you hoping for him to take?
I hear what you’re saying about moving Chapter 55 to the next book, but I’m not sure about it yet. I do feel like it would fit fine in the beginning of the second book, but I didn’t want it to feel like a last-minute development that I decided on after finishing the first book. I’m not sure if that makes sense–like it’s detached from the first book? But this isn’t a major change, so I’ll try to look at it during editing of the first book again and see if I can wrap up the book just as well without it.
I have started writing the second book, but I think I’m going to wait until it’s finished before sending it out to beta-readers. Currently I’m working on outlining it, and once that’s done, I may have to go back and do slight revisions to the first book before I feel comfortable continuing to write the sequel. If you are interested in doing this again once it’s finished, I can put you on the list for beta-reading and send it out once it’s finished, Lord willing. If you end up being too busy or don’t want to continue though, that’s totally fine.
Thank you so much for all your feedback!

For Alec’s arc, I was expecting him to do something in the climax that would impact either Sara or Cole. Prehapes both of them. Something like helping Sara, telling Witlock that he can’t work there anymore, helping Cole ‘protect’ Sara, or even standing up to Cole and trying to stop him.
I think chapter 55 wouldn’t feel like a last-minute thing for the beginning of book two. Stories usually start with what is currently the normal world for the character. So for Sara, this would be people questioning her about the article, and a city protesting the Guardian Act. The end of Book I sets this off as Sara’s new normal world, and starting Book II like this would show us that Sara’s life is still like this before it is interrupted by a mandatory trip to see her aunt for her saftey. So it would feel right there, you might just have to change it up a bit. Like maybe start it off with Sara heading to work, seeing signs of protest, and wondering what Lise will think. It would be a good oppertunity to refresh the reader on Book I and to start to set Sara up for her Book II arc.
Of course, I say this without knowing what Book II is like yet, so you could hold off on this, experiment around a bit, or ignore this suggestion.
And yes, I am willing to help with revisions of Book I!
