I don’t share my writing with my family, either. A while ago (like back in middle school) I would write stories about a fictional family, based off of my family, and re-tell my family’s vacations that way. I let my brothers read some of those, and they were criticizing it left and right, so I stopped letting them read my writing.
I agree with what @jonas was saying, too- I’d rather wait to let my family read my stories until they’re at least in somewhat of a more complete state. I’m fine sharing my writing with other writers, because we’re more in the same boat, but some of my stories are also pretty personal, and my family would quickly be able to see things in them that other people wouldn’t notice. I guess that’s probably partly an insecurity issue I should deal with, but learning to be vulnerable takes time.
I also agree with what @whalekeeper was saying. I used to be the quiet kid, the one who was different that no one really understood. I wish that I would have realized that I was in that place partly because of my own choosing, and I didn’t have to stay there. I’ve gotten so stuck in the mindset that I have to wait for someone to come along and talk to me, when in reality, I was missing so many opportunities for friendships simply because I wasn’t willing to initiate a conversation, or because I was letting my preconceived ideas of what I thought they thought about me dictate my actions. Now I wonder how many of those people would have been excited if I had just gone up to them and asked them how they were doing?
Is initiating a friendship scary? Is putting yourself in situations where you have to meet new people intimidating? Yes. But the more you do it, the easier it gets. Some people you may not click with, but there are others that might become good friends that you would never have known if you didn’t take a risk and make an effort to start a friendship.

December 16, 2023 at 1:24 pm #169918Ah, sharing your writing with your family. This is an ongoing joke in our household. Mom and Dad have only read a couple short stories I’ve written, even though I claim to be writing a few books. So every time the topic of writing comes up, it’s like, “If she actually writes…” 😂
I personally just don’t like sharing something with non-writers until it’s in the second/third draft or completely finished. So I’ve read my first drafts to my younger siblings out loud, which they think are awesome, but I know they need a lot of work, lol. I’m actually planning to share the second draft of my WIP with my parents by February so they can give me feedback on the characters, plot, and pacing.
So really, that’s just my main reason for not sharing my writing with them often. I don’t want them to see the bad stuff or the good stuff, I want them to see the better stuff so they can help make it the best stuff. They’re avid readers to, so I trust their feedback. And they won’t sugarcoat anything either. If it’s bad, they’ll tell me. XD
It really is up to you whether you want to share your writing or not. I would say plan to eventually. And if you think they’ll give you valuable feedback before it’s in the final draft, then definitely let them read it. I know some parents will only give positive feedback with no critiques though. 😉 Anyway, that’s just my opinion. 🙃

Yeah, like everyone else said, I think it’s normal. For me it’s sometimes scary to share my writing, I don’t know why. It just feels so personal. My mom and my sister read my stuff sometimes, too, though. It’s almost easier to let others who you don’t know very well see it than people you do know… Maybe because their opinion matters a lot to you? I don’t know.
@both of you
I might be joining CC this semester! Do you guys like it?

December 16, 2023 at 1:58 pm #169922It’s “plot armor” and “tone armor” actually, I think. Plot armor refers to a character being protected by the plot. I think you would use that term in a situation where a character keeps surviving just because they’re important to the plot.
I’ve never heard of tone armor.

📚 Appreciator of BooksDecember 16, 2023 at 2:02 pm #169925I would guess Tone Armor is character being protected to make it appropriate for the target audience, or something like that.
Signature is limited to 100 characters? That seems awfully unjust. We refuse to be bound by these ru
December 16, 2023 at 2:07 pm #169927That would make sense.

📚 Appreciator of BooksDecember 16, 2023 at 2:11 pm #169928I dont share my work with anyone in my family except my little brother who loves to hear my storys and hes the only one in my life right now who will listen to me yammer on about it for hours 🙂
Its really up to you whether you want to or not. My parents are both good people and love to read what I write, but I dont want to share my WIP with them until I’m done. Maybe because I have been working on it so long and it means so much to me that I dont want them to not understand why I wrote what I did. Personally I believe my work is a little dark, but there is a good message in there that I’m sure they will understand, but that may be the reason why I dont share it with them as I write it. I need time to edit and make sure the message shows clearly? I hope that makes sense, I’m kind of tired and multitasking at the moment 🙂

Tone armor is less of an official term, but I’ve heard it used a couple of times. Basically it’s plot armor, but instead of the character being protected by the plot, they are protected by the tone and style of the story. For example, Bugs Bunny can be hit by a mallet without having serious brain injury or death, because he’s Bugs Bunny, in a Saturday morning cartoon. The story is supposed to be light-hearted, cartoony, and totally does not follow real life rules. He has tone armor against brain injury.

Oh, I like it! Lots of great subjects and conversations. Your happiness will probably depend on how cool the other kids are, though. If you do join, tell me how it goes 🥰

Yep! I just gave myself a cool display name because I saw that everyone else had one, but I have no problem with people using my actual tag.

That’s good! I will! I’m not sure how it’ll be since I know it’s going to be a lot more work than I’m used to, but I think it’ll be fun, and it’s only a semester in case it ends up being too much XD. I’ve never done it before.
